I agree with Greg, very well said Golem. You have a very descriptive writing style and I do enjoy reading your posts. They are well thought out and very cleverly written. If you are not already a writer, you should consider it. :wink:
 
wait spector are hand made???

This is hard to believe. With sooo many US spectors I've seen in shops and no MTD in sight nor Sadowsky, I'd be surprised if the building team is composed of only 3 guys or that they don't use CNC.

Maybe 3, maybe more. "3 person craft shop" is just a figger of speech,
so to speak. Even if MTD is 3 guys and Spector is 15 or 20, making
Spector the higher volume shop, it's still a craft shop, a luthery if you
please. IIRC Ernie Ball has about 250 employees. I suppose Flo or Greg
can chime in and tell how many employees Warwick has. What I do
know for sure is when I call Spector, Stuart answers. And he doesn't
say "Stuart Spector Music Enterprises, how may I direct your call?" or
even "Thank you for calling Spector". He just says "Hello". He answers
your questions without even telling you who he is unless you ask.

I see that Warwick enthusiasts prize the H.P. Wilfer autograph on the
limited edition models. My NSJH5 is just a stock, off-the-rack model.
AAMOF I got it on clearance, new, at a very big Big Box Store. It's no
special edition or anything, but it's signed and dated by Stuart Spector,
which BTW means it has a lifetime warranty. Maybe Spector is the most
productive craft shop, with the largest staff. Maybe Stuart spends all day
just signing headstocks and talking on the phone, and hasn't touched
a tool or a even a piece of sandpaper for many years. Good for him :-)

As to CNC, well CNC by subcontracting can be a necessity if a shop is
very small. Rick Turner's shop is just a few people, and to keep up with
orders without creating a two year lag [it's usually months] all the necks
are CNC'd by subcontract altho Turner's shop still has to complete them
before they can be installed. Does that mean a Turner ax is not hand
made ? Depends on who you ask, I spoze.

Output of USA Spectors is 350 basses per year. Only 1/3 of that is the
more labor intensive neck-thru type. The shops that you visit apparently
have a rather large portion of his output on their walls :-)

There are only two or three models of Spector USA bass, depending
on whether you consider the BO and NT version of the same bass to
be seperate models. Whatever .... you can get your NS bass as a BO
or NT, with plain or fancy top, and in 4, 5, or 6-strings. There's also
an NT-only "T-bird" type called the "Rex" in 4 or 5-string. Thaz it, the
whole Spector USA catalog. Production volume: 1.25 basses per day.
Pretty big factory, huh ?

Most Spectors in my area are the European built models with a few USA's.
It's good to see Stuart Spector talks to cutomers.Not unlike HPW emails customers back with answers,sometimes within minutes.

Thin you'll find it's actually less than 24 hours in a day. the extra day every four years is to make up the difference :wink:
