Adjustable Brass Nut

Ok...it seems the previous owner to my 97' Warwick Streamer said the current brass nut may be stiff (the individual adjusters *screw*) so I may need to anyways get a replacement to be safe atleast :D

Anyone know where I can get one? UK please

in advance...Im not interested in the JAN, JAN II or JAN III

There's no need to buy a new nut,just remove the screws,clean the threads & apply a tiny drop of machine oil to prevent it happening again. :wink:
 
Apparently (the previous owner) says the screws are stiff,

*idea* I'm taking it to a technician in a week for low action to accustom light gauge strings. Should I suggest he remove it and apply WD40 or some sort of loosening mechanical spray to loosen the screws then re-attach?

or is it easy to be left on and a gentle touch is required?

That's not a bad idea - might be oxidisation that's causing the binding. I had to soak the bridge parts of my abused 87 in WD40 to get them to budge. Just make sure you clean the WD40 off after too. I used meths for this.

I'd definitely try WD40 applied directly to the head of the adjusters with a cotton swab. There exists no earthly tool that I know of that fits the adjuster screw heads, but a small flat blade screw driver might work. Move the screw heads back and forth a little to work the oil in. The screws should gradually loosen. There should be no great force needed.

It would be better to do this without removing the nut if you can. It is possible that if the nut had to be glued back on at one time, that glue got into the threads and is causing the binding. In that case, it might need to be removed and soaked in acetone for a while.

It's better to try loosening the screws than tightening. With brass nuts, it's possible to recess the adjusters in far enough to crack the glue and the nut will come off.

WD40 and a little patience should do the trick.

IMO some precautions should be taken to prevent WD40 contacting wooden parts near the nut. I'd still remove it for cleaning or at least cover everything else with scotch tape.
 
To free up the screws without stripping the slot ask one of your mates if they have a hollow ground screwdriver set.I have a set I bought when i used to build rifles with my dad & they're the best & safest way to loosen them.The reason the screws are tight is because of oxidation on the threads.As mentioned above,if you spray the nut with WD40,it might be best to remove the nut from the bass first.It's held in place by 2 drops of super glue so a sharp,short knock with a wooden mallet will free it.
