i was wondering.

does anyone have trouble with there left hand 3rd finger independence?

its hard to describe, does everyone experience this? for example;

count on your fingers from 1 to 4, as you count, erect them (lol) 1, 2, 3,4 , wen you get to 3, does it feel like the 3rd desnt want to come up without the pinky?

does anyone know any ways to get rid of this? any exercises?

cheers :)

i think the pinky and 3rd finger have a joint tendon???

Just tried that and I held my pinly down with my thumb automatically. Hmm...

Hey buddy,
Corvette master might be right. They have a joint tendon, or the tendons are linked with a common membrane, something like that. Anyway the 3rd finger is the weakest of them all, you cannot change it. Keep practicing and it will be ok, you will make them independent.
Stu hamm has some nice exercices for that, and Pattitucci too, in their video tutorials.

where can i get thes tutorials from florin?

maybe i could get an operation to snip the tendon lol

better not tho

As far as my information goes it really is similar like that - but not everybody has it. Some people have got this adhesion, others dont.
Don't force anything. I remember the story of an famous composer (yeah, he is THAT famous that i forgot the name ;) ) strung one cord to the 3rd finger and pulled it up in order to expand the movment abilities. Half of his hand became lame.

A little practice is okay, maybe it will make it better - but you'll never be able to move it totaly freely

wow! wouldnt want that to happen!

I had trouble with "pinky independence" probably more to do with strength than anything else. I used the exercises in a book called "Bass Fitness" by Josquin Des Pres (published by Hal Leonard)... this worked a treat!

However, other guys on this forum have put some similar exercises on the forum... but I can't remember the name of the thread or threads... you'll need to search a bit!

cheers :D

love ou to get back to me Florin

thanx! :D

Hey mate, here you go:

[ame]https://www.amazon.com/John-Pattitucci-Complete-Electric-Bass/dp/B000IU3XYW[/ame]

I have pretty much total independence on left hand. I don't have it on my right hand, so this is telling me that the left hand exercices worked :-)

You could also - as an extra feature get a gripmaster.

They come with different tension.... A guitarist at my school has one with medium tension and it is hard as a rock to move with my 3rd finger;) I'll be getting one when I get my paycheck. They are small so u can have them in a jacket pocket for when you are riding a train/bus and can't rip your bass out :D

I have one of those I use while on my delivery route.

you can work on that finger even when you don't play. Just lay your hand on a table or flat surface and try to lift up only the 3rd finger. It will be hard at first, but eventually you'll be able to do it consistently. Simple exercises like that really make a difference.

Hmm, Weird... My third finger and pinky use to move together... And I just realized that they don't anymore.

I only experience minor issues with finger indep on my left hand, but I'm interested to note how much worse the problem is on my right hand!

The gripmaster looks cool....but be careful guys! The last thing you want is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome!

Buy the lightest one, Medium is too hard for us, we don't need it!
