I too was shocked
Last Friday, the 5th I walked into Guitar Center with one of those $15 cards they send out. I just drifted over to the basses and noticed a $699 price tag on a Corvette. I thought it was probably used. It was brand new with absolutely no wear. It's also has the active electronics. I foolishly thought about it over night. I called them Saturday morning before they opened and they still had it so I had them hold it aside. When I got there I had them pull the gig back out. Everything was there and the paperwork matched the serial number on the Corvette. The tags from Dana B Goods had a 12/2/08 date on them. I'm guessing that is when they shipped it to GC. Although, that seems awfully quick. That would have meant I purchased it only four days after it was shipped. I asked them how long they had it. One person thought about a week. I walked out with it just shocked by my find. They show the active model on their web site for $1,439. I'm fortunate that it lasted from Friday lunch until I called them Saturday. It plays really nice too.
I suppose it's a sign of the economic times. Perhaps they aren't selling the four string active bubingas very well. They did say it was below cost. GC's got some good pricing currently going on, but this took the cake!
I had to return my Fulltone Deluxe Clyde Wah and list my Fulltone GT-500 and Maxon CS-9 on eBay to offset the cost. But it's worth it.

That $15 off card worked well then, they send those out hoping you'll hook up a new ax while you're in there.

Free Ernie Ball Strings t-shirt, couple free packs of Dunlop Big Stubby 3.0MM picks... I've never gone in there with a promotional card and actually spent something.

Actually, I didn't use the $15 card
I had the $15 card and a 10% off coupon with me when I first saw it. I greedily asked if I could use the 10% coupon. NO, but yes to the $15 card. I left. I forgot the $15 card when I went back to purchase it. It was so new that the pickup covers were blemish free, no slapping. I really suspect that I was the first to try it out.
Sorry for the brag, but it's the best deal I have ever encountered. I think GC might be a good place to frequently check out right now.

Congrats on the find brother!
GC often has pretty good deals when
it comes to Corvettes. Not to mention
the fact that the pay system sucks there
so it's pretty easy to haggle the prices
down as well.
I've heard tales of guys leaving a GC
with a new Corvette, HSC, and strings
for $850.
You just gotta find the right salesperson,
and talk to them, don't be afraid to walk
out. They need that commission more than
you need that bass, remember that, and
you'll never go home empty-handed.

Actually, since GC put the computers in-store to check competitors pricing, the only way you can really haggle is if the product is damaged. I've tried it.

They have a deal running where they'll help you check their prices vs everyone else, if you find a better deal they match it plus give you 10% back.
Since then, no more negotiating is allowed. Employees can't do it, make or break a sale they get in too much trouble.
Saw a guy buying a Les Paul and was going to pick up some like $500 Line6 pedal board thing too and they wouldn't knock anything off the price so he walked out, it was sad.

we buy all our supplies for the church there at GC (drum heads, guitars, pedals, strings, mics, etc) and they do not help wiuth the prices anymore or throw in freebies. I found this out 3 weeks ago.
I went there last week and was there for about 3 hours and no sales were made maybe 5 people walked in and out.

Less traffic
I have noticed a lot less traffic in Guitar Center lately. I suspect it's the economy more than their pricing structure.
FYI, I always hunt down the cheapest price on the Internet and print it off before going to Guitar Center. They always match it and it makes the transaction go much more quickly. It seems like there is always somebody somewhere selling an item for less, with free shipping. I had them match a $265 price on a $350 Boss BR-600. I also got a $580 Mustang Bass NIB for $460 via price matching. I don't haggle anymore, I just find the Internet price, print it out and take it in with me. I highly recommend doing all of the homework ahead of time.
$699 was the asking price for the Corvette. It's difficult to find a beat up one for that price. I guess I also should have bought a lotto ticket that day. FYI, I'm the guy who posted earlier in the year about an as new Thumb BO that I purchased for $1,150. It was two years old but had never been used by the looks of it. I was there when the guy traded it in for the Geddy Bass. I no longer have the Thumb. I ended up trading it in on something else. I like the Corvette better for my use.
I mentioned that the Dana B Goods' tag had a 12/2/08 date on it. This is that tag inserted into the black vinyl tag that hangs from the headstock when you unbox one. I saw the bass in a Dallas GC on 12/5/08 and bought it on 12/6/08. A maximum of three days shipping from Dana B Goods to a retail GC store in Dallas doesn't really seem possible. The actual manufacturing date was February '08. The tag and warranty papers did match the serial number on the Corvette so I know they were correct. Any thoughts on the date?

in Latin America that dating format is also used. I used it when I was going through elementary and middle school when I was little in Mexico City. When I got to the states this format for the dates threw me off and now I get confused when I visit family there. :wink:

That's got to be it.
That would make more sense. The serial number is a 2/08 number. So it was probably made in early February of this year. Thanks for pointing that out. It didn't even occur to me. I see that every time I have to set the clock for a camera, or related electronics.
