got this record a few days ago:
jonas hellborg & buckethead:
octave of the holy innocents

i love the music of buckethead (if you don't like metal, you'll like to listen to "colma" and "electric tears". if you like metal, you will enjoy these albums, too)

and i very much like the tone and the style of hellborg's playing.
i saw him on musikmesse in frankfurt this year. with his signature warwick.
his bass looked like it wasn't too versatile (only one pickup very close to the bridge, only one knob, probably for tone ?).
but when i heard him play, i was gone. it was a superb finger picking sound, then he started slapping and that was brilliant, too.

just listen to "octave of the holy innocents" and enjoy.
the music is very nice.
i especially like "child king" and "kidogo".
and check the bass sound out. it's wonderful.

its a volume so thats even less versatility than what you were thinking. (you've always got the outboard preamp/heads for tone control)

the reason jonas did it like this is because he prefers to have an outoard preamp that doesnt rely on battory power.

this is also i presume why he just has just the single passive pickup. two pickups would have required circuitry for the tone/balance and this would require more circuitry (more circuitry to loss tone in?) and also why the pickup is passive...again it doesnt rely on battory power

Any recording that features Jonas is great imo.I'm yet to find one I dont like.Neck time you're at youtube,check out his work with the late Shawn Lane.
