thought about fingerboard choices and realised i went slowly from a warm
palissander sound to coromandel, then later the more harsch ebony, and now
upcoming snakewood. just curious, what is your favorite fingerboard wood?

I'm still in my Ebony & coromandel (aka macassar ebony) days and probably will be for the rest of my life unless someone changes my mind.
 
I think it depends on the instrument... I like instruments with maple, ebony, palisander, but I've noticed my workhorses were pretty much fretted with wenge fingerboard.
The 84 streamer was rosewood though :-)
 
I like the percussive tone of Tigerstripe Ebony, but Wenge is great too. Would love to try Snakewood out someday.
 
On fretless basses, I like me some ebony - although I have a Bongo with a pau ferro board, and that isn't bad either. I'd prefer finish on my fingerboard a la Jaco if at all possible.

On fretted basses, I really love an all-maple neck. I'm shocked at how 'difficult' it is to find maple fingerboards these days - it seems to be either rosewood or ebony. Ebony is in second place, and I have nothing against pau ferro or wenge. I have absolutely no use for rosewood.

(Can't wait to hear the conversations about the tonal differences between ebony and "tigerstripe ebony")

EDIT: Nothing beats a wonderfully figured Ekanga.

I actually love the Phenolic fretboard on my modulus... And the strange thing is that I didn't like the wooded fretboard on other modulus I've tried... Like Florin said It really depends alot on the bass... I'm a great fan of wenge, however for the fretboard It's not one of my favorite woods at all... It's not because of the sound, but the look that it gets after all the dirt builds up on the wood pores... But I'm not too picky on the fretboard wood, I like them all :D.
 
Always liked ebony the best, but wenge and palisander/pau ferro close.
 
Have you tried tigerstripe ebony and, erm, "regular" ebony on the same instrument? How do you know that it's not the rest of the instrument that's providing more highs? :D
 
But then your ears respond to humidity and air pressure as well... Anyone else noticing his bass + stack sounding different every week in the rehearsal room while at the exact same EQ settings? Sometimes it is doing my head in.
 
For looks I like maple boards. But since I have my ´wicks I can´t think about a better fretboard wood than wenge. Of course, fretless boards are another world, tigerstripe ebony looks very nice, but this snakewood looks awesome.
 
Way cool! If all goes well I have a fretless four string coming up somewhere soon. All this talk of glissandi and vibrati makes me want to play it right now... But I will have to be patient for a couple more weeks.

What do you think about Aluminium fingerboards JP? I heard a Le Fay Remington Steele the other day and was pretty much in awe with the tone it produced. It looks weird though.

not for me. especially in regard to upcoming classical pieces which need a very dynamic wood character.
 
Usually prefer Tigerstripe Ebony, Snakewood, and Maple fingerboards...but, imo, it really depends on the instrument and the other woods/PU components of the bass...

Ordering the standard Wenge option ended up a good choice for my Star Bass II, but not my preference on other basses. Really haven't cared for Rosewood to date...but maybe just haven't heard it on the right instrument... :-)
