Which 5 string?

The pickup positions I would think has a lot to do with it. Like I said in another thread, my dream was to have a Fortress 5 with the pickups in the thumb's position to hopefully have my balanced bass with the thumb sound. I'm sure the woods and the bridge has an awful lot to do with it as well.

They ate two VERY different animals. I own both and I love both but I use them for very different things.

Exactly what boston said. Two completely different animals. The Thumb NT5 really has no comparison. It has it's own very unique and special sound and tonal quality.
 
Thumb NT 5 it is then. I've started looking for a second hand one on basschat.
 
Good choice :) You will be impressed, but more than that wait to see what your band mates and friends will tell you. Only a thumb bass has this strong reaction :)
 
Congratulations on your future Thumb rmcki! I would sell you mine but I love her too dearly even after all these years together (despite current affair with a Sadowsky)

You sir, have clearly never pulled a dolphin out of its case in front of people who have never seen or heard one before......
 
Althoughn the first recation to a lolphin can often be "what the hell happened to your bass? did it melt?"

That was my first reaction when I saw a streamer... Well It was a spector actually. It look like a melted Jbass to me :)
 
Other bassists at the jamsession usually tell me they prefer a P-Bass to my Dolphin until they get to play that Dolphin themselves.
Prejudice among bass players what a disgrace...

I like the sound of a lot of different basses for specific reasons.
For modern stuff and deep growly tone I use the '95 Pro1 5str, for the most powerful midrange in the world I grab the '89 Pro1 4.
Then for oldskool pick playing rock tone there's the Ric 4003 which sounds both unelegant and brutally snarly as hell.
If I'm gonna add more different tones to my arsenal it will probably be in the shape of a Thumb 5 and a P-Bass 4. Also the Stage II keeps popping up in my mind I think I ought to try one of those too.

One thing always remains clear though... the build quality and playability of my Warwicks is clearly superior to any other brand I played. They also have this raw edge that other high end basses seem to miss (Played a Fodera Emperor and some Fbass model a while ago, both were sounding a bit too sterile to my taste but played like a dream).

So, the way I see things: Try all well known bass models out there! Each has their strengths and weaknesses. If you haven't actually played one in your lifetime your opinion about it will be based on nothing.

Got my NT 5 from a member of basschat.co.uk. What a monster of a bass! I can't put it down. It seems the bass can bend the laws of physics, first 5 string and probably my only 5er, and I'm taking to it like a duck to water. Slapping is going to take a bit of time to sort out. How does this bass do it? More aggression = more growl! And the range of tones, i was like a child in a sweet shop, discovering a new sound at every corner.

Must steep my bleeding stumps of fingers in some pixie dust for some more playing tomorrow.
 
This bass have not the conventional fat slap sound, but it has a specific growly aggressive one. Check Mudvaine for the reall slappy thumby, Ryan Martinie is a monster!

Excellent choice, I just got my brand new NT5 (used to own a 1988 JD Thumb 4 String back in the day), I have dreamt of the NT 5 since 1989, have a Fender Jazz 5 (owned since 1991, and regretted selling the JD) which is a good bass but the Warwick is head and shoulders above it (and most other Basses)...

I love my Warwick 5 string basses both Thumb 5 strings and Streamer LX 5. I have never tried the others you list but I am sure they are high quality as well. Good luck in finding your sound - I have.
