When did they stop using EMG an Bartolini's?

I just wondered, when did warwick stop using EMG's and Batrolini's in their basses and what were the reasons for doing this?
 
We started using MEC as soon as we had them. First we used J and P MEC picups, and then we kept Barts and SD for a longer time untill we made soapbars for broadnecks.
In the early 90's
 
As Flo said; the earliest 80's basses had SD, Bart, EMG (and others I'm sure), the late 80's saw the introduction of MEC and you had a period during the late 80's into the 90's where you might have either MEC/EMG/Bart/SD, until the non-MEC pups were gradually phased out.. unless by customer/special order.
 
Are the tonal differences great? lately someone told me the specific warwick sound comes mainly from the Mec pickups, is that true?
 
considering those old Warwicks were sounding like Wicks, too - no it's not true.
It's just a matter of taste. PU are mighty in coloring the sound of your axe, but not almighty! PU Placement + construction (type of construction and woods) will always influence enough, to let your WW sound like one ;)

The question that you pose is a one that will continue to power debates but as has been pointed out by boebl; an old EMG/Bart/SD equipped Warwick bass from the early 80's still sounds like a Warwick bass.

I've owned Streamers equipped with every conceivable permutation of pup and I can tell you categorically that the pup manufacture is 'probably' the least important aspect of their tone. In fact I've personally swapped pups around to identify which sounds best and I can hear no appreciable difference... not saying NO difference but the bass still retained 99% of the original tone.

Further to that I've only just reinstalled a pair of SD pups into a bass after swapping them out for a pair of MEC's as there was absolutely no difference to the tone HOWEVER in the process I did establish that tinkering with the preamp adjustment (whilst in a controlled environment) can help you establish what you can get from your instrument! :lol:
 
The best wick i have played is a Thumb NT 6 with barts.
 
I have owned 2 6 string neck thru thumbs, 1 with barts in it and a late model, both were sweat but I would love to get my early 90's bart equipped thumb back! If any of u have it and ever want to sell it back, I need it! Easily I. D'd by the scooped out wood area by the c string where the neck ends! Needed more clearance. 7654260924, any of you have her?
