I do like my home practice tone to be pleasing
to me, but it's certainly not related to what an
audience hears. I brought out a new bass for a
first "public debut" even though I was anxious
to get rid of the overly brite strings that were
on it since it arrived. Aaaannnnd .... turns out
I hadda boost the treble to play in that mix. It
seems the strings are NOT overly brite, altho I
do wanna change them for something a whole
lot less stiff ... geez what work out.

I'm kinda spoiled about hearing the voices of
my basses cuz I played thousands of gigs with
just vox, piano and bass. Even the diva hears
it. Her comments have included stuff such as:

"Save that for bigger rooms, it's too forward",
"That's the best one for here, always bring it",
"Thaz not my baby, what bass is THAT ?", and
the chilling "Never bring that one again !"

I never introduce a new-to-diva bass without
having an approved backup ax in the car.

Now I know lotsa you all play with loud drums
and "heroic" geetards, and so all the audience
hears of your bass is pretty much boom boom,
and what they hear of the whole band is boom
boom screatch, wham crash, skreeeetch, boom
boom ... and acoarst the geetar hero is waaay
into his "MY Tone" ... even though it's all in his
head when on stage. ANd if that describes your
band, well, sux2BU and you may be a reeeally
nice guy and even a misguided musical genius,
but I would walk out of your show in under 10
seconds, no exaggeration, bendare dondat got
the tee shirt AND the hat !

As I admitted, I am spoiled.

Ha, as you can see in the vids this exactly describes our music style! ;) But I can tell you it doesn´t suk2BMi, I use to ♣♣♣♣ the divas. :lol:

There are enough vids in this forum of live performances of really great playing guys and we bassplayers surely hear a difference. Maybe the good guitar players and singers too. But the audience? Most of our crowd (nearly 100 per cent) meet us today and go to a disco party tomorrow and an electronic house beat next week. They want a nice show, can´t tell a guitar from an egg slicer. I here and there played a six string (I´m no ♣♣♣♣ing musical genius btw. I´m at lesson two of the beginners book). Often enough people asked me why I changed from bass to guitar because of the many strings. That means they even had no idea what tone at all came out of my gear. That´s the bitter truth. But as long as we get told "nice show!" and have 10 beers with the crowd after the gig that is o.k. for us.

Back on topic: the bass in the vid above is an Esp. Ltd. TA-200, you can get it used for 300,- EUR. The bass in the second vid is an Infy CS, worth 3.000,- EUR. No downtuning, the Ltd. is equipped with BEAD d´Addarios, the Infy is a 5er with Elixir nanoweb strings. I hear a big difference, but both basses do the same job. My Infy NT4 Ltd. (passive open pole piece pus) has a complete another sound (much hotter) to the Infy NT5.

uOpt would always be invited for a coffee and a check through my Wick´ed collection. And any other sympathic member of this forum too ofc.! No vid ot talk can replace a personal run of a gear. But good luck with your choice!

,,,since i am a beginner and my basses are not the best ones.. i can hear each other different (if played solo or only with drumtrack), but mostly they are nuances, one more harsh, one more softer, one more boomier...etc.etc....but in case if i mix it with a song, there are almost so tiny differences, that i can say..its the booombooombooom factor, and sometimes one cut better through the mix as the other Bass, but a bass make a basstone ;) :D

on stage from one bass to the next, to
hear that difference more distinctly, or
is "less indistinctly", to mint a phrase,
cut the bass boost on the ax and the
amp. Bass obscures the sound of your
bass ... and the rest of the band, who
will natcherly turn UP in response, so
keep a lid on it :-)

Agreed! I have bass on ax and amp at half or less.
 
Welll, this is one reason why I can't "decide" on even a pickup style.

Not every situation and not every room are the same. Room too boomy? You want less bass. Keyboard has twitchy left hand syndrome? You want to cut more. Your amp is too wimpy? You need to go up a bit, can't project the low B.

The point is, a more suitable pickup position is a much better fix for these things than messing with the EQ. Messing with the EQ you end up trying to boost frequencies that are not picked up by your current pickup position in the first place.

Errrrr yeah well... Next time I will try playing bass lines on a damn flute then. Will be better audible. Might not be as pleasing tho. ;)

No to mention the incredible portability of a piccolo flute :) ( I still remember someone had a sticker on the upright bass case: "No this case does not contain a gun; Yes, I know I could have played a piccolo flute")
 
This kind of reminds me of this profile I read on the bassist for Staind or something. He fancies himself an audiophile purist, hates ported cabs due to terrible transient response (but happily tours with sealed, tweeterless Ampeg cabs, including 18s), and is a huge hater of bass preamps. He says all they do is ruin tone. He says the best bass tone comes from plugging in his active bass to a power amp input and using the onboard EQ if necessary.

Full featured bass preamps? Terrible. 9V onboard electronics of a Spector Legend? The bee's knees.

We're a funny people, I tell ya.
 
He went onto say he doesn't care if a song sucks, he likes it if it's mixed well. But yeah, preamps operating on mains power ruin tone, and nothing says purity more than battery operated circuitry.

As a matter of fact I really like metal that uses flutes (e.g. Rhapsody). But it might not be the instrument for me.

A fellow forum member let me try his $$. I think $$ might work for me, but I still prefer Corvettes over Streamers at this time.
 
I have this pu config on my Infy NT4 Ltd. Great! Hot serial sound, SUPER noiseless sound in humbucker mode. Perfect combination for live and studio situations.

Hmm, I thought you have a double J in the infinity, and that it is a bit more away from the bridge. Actually, do you know where exactly yours sits?
