Personally I think the most important thing is to enjoy your playing!
After that i think finding your own voice and feel, to make music your own, as bass player and a musician is the most important thing.

Indeed,

however, I notice often that my playing sounds really bad, even though it's "supposed" to be really easy. It turns out often, that my playing lacks groove. An example is Alice in Chains' "Would?". The bassline is really simple tabwise, but I just couldn't make it sound right....................It's really in the groove to make that bassline shine. It took me over 5 years (!) to make it sound acceptable............... :shock:

Groove, definately! I always use a lot of dead notes, you just gotta have the feeling i think. However, you also should have a good sense for Melody. You probably gotta find something inbetween. And a variety of different techniques is important, as well as some theory.
