what bands get you motivated to be a bass player?

the only band that "talked" me into playing bass, and being an active musician is Mudvayne.
At 15, i was just this angry kid that wanted to sink his frustrations by starting to listen to metal. The first metal song that i liked was "Not Falling". I didn't know much about what the bass is, but that bald guy on the video looked really into it! "wish i could be that cool!" so, it's quite funny, that i started out playing for pretty shallow reasons. but now, it's my life. Very big thanks to RDM. I got four of my questions answered on the forum interview :) although we don't know each other, i owe Ryan more than life - it can sound funny, but he made me a person i am today and i'm truly grateful for that. his approach to writing songs, and basslines for a metal band got me to appreciate what i find to like, not what's in the trend. if i started out with a different bassist, maybe i wouldn't got into the music i adore right now, and listen to numerous brilliant bassists in a lot of genres. maybe i'd be much more frustrated than now.

Watching Marco in the video for Ashes to the Stars for some reason made me want to get back to music, it was this cool shot of Marco playing with his gorgeous long hair flying, etc etc...that just hooked me onto Tarot, omg that Infinity was so gorgeous...I could only hope to have a Warwick, but started on a cheap Ibanez that nearly discouraged me cos it was crap...then I found my Corvette, match made in heaven...a damn good bass inspires, so i kept up playing and learning.

His brother is my guitar hero, added a sweet Jackson dinky to my arsenal. Silly me, I day dream about taking lessons from Zac, but he's on the other side of the planet. He knows I would love to learn from him though; we talk sometimes.
I got one thing to say about the guys of Tarot, nicest guys on Earth. Especially Zac...

The first guy who ever brought the bass to my full attention was Steve Harris (IRON MAIDEN). I got their first album in 1981 at the age of 15 and my ears have never listened the same to anything since.

Lots of players since then have earned my deep respect for many different reasons:

Verni (OVERKILL), Timi Hansen (early MERCYFUL FATE/KING DIAMOND), Geezer Butler (BLACK SABBATH), Geddy Lee (RUSH), Ron Royce (CORONER), Fran Sheehan (BOSTON), Tim Commerford (AUDIOSLAVE), Alex Webster (CANNIBAL CORPSE), Steve DiGiorgio (DEATH/SADUS), Markus Grosskopf (HELLOWEEN), Rani Sharone (STOLEN BABIES), Dirk Lance (INCUBUS), Doug Pinnick (KING'S X), Boz Burrell (BAD COMPANY), among many others.

The first one, when I was a kid, was John Deacon. So I started studying, and I discovered so many talented players: Steve DiGiorgio, Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller. Nowadays I can say that I still am learning from them and from others, like Jeroen and Erlend Caspersen, but I try hard to find my sound.

Steve Harris started me playing bass.

In terms of infleunces on how I actually play - Norwood Fisher, Muzz Skillings, Doug Pinnick, Flea up to around BloodSugar, Mark King, Rocco Prestia, etc etc etc

Anyone who grooves really.

I do like Flea, but Randy made that Avatar for me using Flea's body, my face, and a made up Wal Bass, which was mostly Randy's idea... I don't mind, I still find it funny and awesome.

I but forgot to mention the 3 that inspired me to pick up bass, not just 10 guys that improved my style. Steve Harris, Cliff Burton, and Geddy Lee (Ya, I already mentioned him in my 10, but still...).
 
It was my second oldest brother who plays drums that told me I should pick up the bass. My oldest brother had been playing guitar for close to 10 years at that point, and my second oldest had been playing drums around 6 years, so it was only natural for me to pick up a bass.

It was really the bands Tool, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and musician's like Victor Wooten that I based my bass influence over. Gradually over time I've really picked up diverse bass influences to my style. I love to play a more melodic jazz-funk oriented riff with what I play. I'd have to say some huge influences on me today would be Justin Chancellor ( Tool ), Jon Stockman ( Karnivool ,) Roy Mitchell Cardenas ( Mute Math ), Colin DeKuiper (Russian Circles), and lastly but certianly not least: Ashish “Hash” Vyas (Thievery Corporation )

I think Vuk and I have very similar influences, I love intronaut man their bassist has some awesome ideas. You should check out Mouth of the Architect, very sludgy-doomy melodic stoner metal.

Mudvayne is crazy! A drummer friend of mine who introduced me to Karnivool and Dead Letter Circus told me about how tight their drummer and bassist and were but I never gave the band a listen because of their nu-metal rep. I finally checked em out and while I can say I would never see them live just based off how they dress up like Slipknot I have a feeling I wouldn't enjoy the audience, their rhythm is extremely tight and intricate! Good stuff! Good thread
 
I mainly blame Glenn Cornick, Jack Casady and Roger Waters for years of fun with the bass.

The Band that made me mad for music was The Beatles.
I Knew the instrument of Bass thank to (the bad) Sid Vicious.

on my side, the first of all is Billy Gould of Faith No More, after I heard Epic I decided I wanted to play bass...
Then Alain Caron (UZEB), Les Claypool, Justin Chancellor then Meshuggah were revelations and the most influencial players/bands to me I think...

These days I really dig Glen Diani (One minute silence: can't wait for a new album from them, since they get together again, great SSII sound. I bought mine not so far ago because of that sound), love Marcus Miller, so nice phrasings and grooves, he speaks with his bass!!

Over the time I have listened and played some Cliff Burton, Steeve Harris, Geddy Lee (the last album is a killer... so Nice...) and Flea riffs a lot...

I reallize I like a lot all these groups where the bass is right in front and bang in your face !! And everytimes I see a thread like this one, I go and listen to my old albums after. lol So nice !!
