What are they playing?

So I found a couple of videos that have an example of a technique that I
can't figure out. I'm sure its something simple that I'm just not getting. It
sounds like they are muting out the note then when they bend it the note
gets louder. I know that they are not using any kinda of volume adjusting so
is it just a very specific mute or a weird bend or what?

Here's the examples:

1.) He plays it at :20

2.) He plays them through out the song but a great example is at 3:16.

Not a trick I know, but what it looks like he's doing and I just tried this on my bass, but I couldn't tell if it was the same thing or not. Let me see if I can explain this well enough.

Okay, playing notes, fingering with left, picking strings with right. Rest for a beat then without picking the string with the right, Bend a note with a finger of the left using a vigorous vibrato of the left hand to make the bend sound.

Not sure if that really made sense, if not I can try to explain what I am trying to say again. But what I did on the bass gave me the same basic Idea of what they are doing. But I also found myself wondering, were they doing it on purpose or did they just miss picking that particular note with the right hand.... there you go.

Bend a note with the left using vibrato just don't pick the note and it has to be a note your finger is already sitting on.

Hope it helps, but I think I just made a mess of it.
 
If this is a mistake, then it's a beautiful sounding one :-)
Yeah, it seems like they first mute the string, and then vibrate it to start the note, like a fade in.

I was thinking it was something like that. I like the way it sounds. It has a
certain restraint to it. Good stuff.

Sound almost like hes trying to make a squeal but the gain is to low.
 
Yeah I think it is kinda like that.

After playing around with some ideas I figured out how to get that effect on
my bass today. It's like a muted plucked but as you bend it resonates more
making it sound like its getting loud. Sounds cool but it has a very limited
use being that its so quiet.
 
I think that it's a similar motion as a pinch harmonic except it mutes it out more.
