hi guys, i would like to ask you about the wenge neck, what is the difference between ovangkol and wenge, for the touch and sound?

thanks a lot for all the help

With regard to feel . . . wenge, if I am not mistaken, has more tensile strength than ovangkol thus it has a slimmer profile that some players prefer. I certainly would not turn my nose up at ovangkol, but if I had a choice I would choose wenge. But that is just my personal preference, your mileage may vary. :)

wenge has a more open grain and is supposed to have a slightly darker growl

I personally prefer the feel of my wenge neck streamer to my thumbs ovangkol neck...

We have the flat neck CS option too ;-)

Edit: the original post was something like this:

Wenge should have a similar tensile strength as Ovangkol. Both are about 50% stronger than Maple. I don't think Warwick had a slim neck profile when they were using Wenge and switched to a thick (current) neck profile because Ovangkol cannot handle the stress. A new custom shop Warwick with Wenge neck will have the same neck profile as the standard Warwick with Ovangkol neck.......... 8)

Then Florian wanted to quote my last sentence, and add the remark that a slim neck profile is a new CS option too.

As woods go, Wenge is similar to rosewood but Ovangkol is similar to Mahogany.

Thats just as family lines go...

Yeah well...............

Sometimes you have cool people...................but their relatives are real bungholes.................Who knows this kind of stuff happens with wood too.

To my ear, Ovangkol responds in a slightly higher frequency range than Wenge. To my hand, Wenge feels more solid, and is definitely a bit heavier. Wenge also seems to offer a lot more sustain than Ovangkol, and the overtones tend to be stronger with the Wenge neck. In humid weather though, my Wenge neck tends to "sweat", while the Ovangkol stays dry as a bone.

Pros and Cons with both woods; as with everything, it's a matter of personal preference.

Dude,

I only wrote: A new custom shop Warwick with Wenge neck will have the same neck profile as the standard Warwick with Ovangkol neck.......... 8)

I think you wrote: We have the flat neck CS option too ;-)

My original message was somehow edited I think............ :? My original message included some stuff about Warwick using Wenge until like 10 years ago, and the neck profile happened to be slimmer, and they changed to a thicker neck profile, not because Ovangkol is less strong. Ovangkol is about as strong as Wenge, and bot are about 50% stronger than Maple.....................And some stuff................

:? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :?

Maybe as a moderator you can edit other people's messages too ?? Instead of pressing "quote" you pressed "edit" ???

Drugs... Just say no!

Ok, you are right , sorry about ruining your post, please post that info again...

And please, don't tell to anybody :-))

what if a fretless has wenge neck and fretboard? i read that wenge has a better and quicker respons than ebony, similar to brasilian rosewood, which is an extrordinary tone wood, ebony is hard enough to supprot the wear .. but what happens with the wenge for a fretless bass? maybe is softer a bit then ebony .. who knows? :?: :D

I think that it is actually too soft, but not quite sure. But, I've already seen plenty of fretless basses with pau ferro fingerboard, which is supposed to be hard enough to handle the wear.

Hi ThirdthumB,

I did not say that. What I said was:

I am a bit confused as to how this happened, at any rate, I hope this helps clear up some of the confusion.

Hey John88,

sorry about the mix up. It's explained a couple of posts before. I did not write that (quoting you what you didn't write either....)
I wrote something regarding to your remark about tensile strength of Wenge versus Ovangkol, and apparantly Florin wanted to quote me, but instead of pressing the "quote" button, Florin probably pressed "edit". Since he is a moderator, he is able to edit other people's messages too.............So, some stuff went wrong............I thought about editing my message again, but that may add more confusion................Get it ??

Sorry, it was me. I wanted to quote, but I've pressed EDIT instead. I just wanted to say that we have flat neck also in Custom Shop :-)
