We Are The "importanter" Musicians!

I think it is obvious at rehearsals. You can pretty much do rehearsalas with any other bandmates missing, but when the bassist is having the flu, it is really hard to do it :-)
 
My band did a rehearsal last week without me. Actually I was that tired from work that I did not even have the power to raise my arms anymore. They tested some Rolling Stones songs, because we have a little project running. I asked them how it went and they said that it was good to find out which songs we will play. But that without the bass they could not train the songs. Interesting... both our guitar guys can play the bass better than me, but it seems no one has dared to take over my part! :p

Like extending or ad-libbing a vocal or guitar melody, echoing one, harmonizing with them...playing a melody within the song that has no direct relation to that of the song, ...being the foundation for the song

Guy Pratt once put it succinctly- and I paraphrase- the bassist is the link between the melodic section to the rhythm section.

I never bother about importance. It is called a band because you bring something to life together. None of the members can do this by himself.
Have you ever experienced being in the zone with the entire band? It is like an out of body experience. The music seems to play you instead of the other way round. Awesome!

Yes! That´s THE MOMENT.
IMO, playing in a band that gives you that kind of experience is addictive, your brain/body develope the need to that, I imagine there are some body chemicals produced, similar to when having sex, eating chocolate or taking some kind of drugs.

I was talking to a non-musician friend the other day and I was trying to explain her that, for me, playing on stage with a band is so addictive that I've experience some kind of abstinence syndrome during long periods of time without playing live/rehearse. In fact, I know a bass player from Venezuela, he was the singer/bass for an almost-famous band that got ripped off by their manager. He suffered such a deppresion that he quit music at all. Then, some day he realized he was missing so much the rush he got from playing live in front of people that he started to practice mountain bike, extreme downhill and stuff, to have a similar rush of adrenaline.

My wife sent me that article the other day! Nothing that we all didn't already know haha :)
I am seriously missing playing with my band. Nothing like it. I tried to explain to a friend once, that you get so bonded with your band mates, it is like a marriage! Never forget my tough guy drummer crying when our guitarist split our band up after 3-4 years together. Just an amazing connection when everything flows.
 
Go as slow or fast as the song needs.....I personally like to play fast, but it really means nothing when it comes to the groove
 
Hehe, but people don't pay to hear the bass.. They pay for the vocalist and the guitarist ;)
