waxing?

Hey all,
I'm a newbie to Warwicks and I was wondering how to go about waxing my Vette? How often? What method works best? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
 
Hey there & welcome.If your Vette is coloured oil finish,dont wax the body at all,but you can wax the back of the neck if you like.If it's just oil finish,go nuts.Apply the wax rather sparingly with a clean cloth,leave the wax on for up to about 15 minutes,then buff off with another clean cloth.Alot of people apply the wax with their fingers but I find I apply far too much wax when I do this.How often you wax is up to you but once a week,or once a month is fine,depending on your dedication to waxing.
 
I would like to piggy back on this question:

I gave my bass it's first wax last week, and now every time I go to play it, my hands pick up a waxy kind of coat and it feels kinda funky. It even gets on my fingers so sliding and making quick shifts is labored by it..

Did I put too much on?

I also must say my hands tend to sweat alot when I play..

Hey dude,It sounds like you may've not buffed the wax off enough.It does dry pretty hard & the drier it is,the more friction needed to remove it.Try putting a tiny bit of wax on your fingers & work that into the wood,then just buff it off & use some elbow grease. :wink:
 
I wax my Bubinga thumb5 about every month or so. I rub the wax on, leave it for an hour or so in a warm room then buff it off. Seems to work well for me. I dont do the back of the neck though. I like to use lemon oil on the neck. Less greasy..

I wax my W every weak....
It is pleasant to me as looks my bass after wax)))))
 
yeah, i find it hard to keep myself from trying to wax it every other day!

Is there any kind of wax or anything that can be found in the house to use in case you don´t have official wax? Were I live is imposible to get the official cleaning kits... :oops:

Bees wax. :wink:
 
yeah, you can usually get bees wax at any local hardware store.
 
ah waxing...the addiction of many warwick user.

Here is my monthly process on the ash and bubinga vettes

1. Use a soldering iron to steam out and dings
2. Use some 0000 steel wool to smooth out the wood and remove any dirt imbedded in the wood grain.
3. Use a tiny amount of lemon oil to clean and nourish the fretboard
4. Polish the frets with a brass polishing cloth
5. Open control cavity, check battery and blow out any dust and use some alcohol to clean jack of contaminants.
6. Wax bass, allowing to dry for 10 mins then buffing off.
7. Restring, tune and check intonation.

Takes about an hour per bass...
 
my god .. :shock: and that must be done for the rest of my life? .. i think Jack bruce hired a waxman for his old Thumb :D . there is not an end line for that waxing, 1-2-3 years?

the manual says: "After regular application of the wax a surface will build up that is similar to a polished wood floor. This layer seals and protects the wood longer so that frequent waxing will become obsolete."

i play the bass every day 2-6 hours, my hands aren't dry etc. .. will i wax my Thumb forever :shock: or what happens if i stop after a couple of years?

ps. i don't care about color changes etc., but care a lot about wood stability ..

Mate,my advice is take a few minutes once a month to wax your bass.That's not a big investment in time but it'll keep your baby in good shape.
 
ok, i know this is the good way :D how often must buy that beeswax anyway? it lasts about a year or less?
 
I'm just finishing my first can after 3 years of regular waxing.A little goes a long way.Dont worry about the cost,your bass is worth it.

You don't say where you live, I know you can get the stuff at Musician's Friend here in the US.

For applying and buffing I like to use a pair of microfiber dusters. They're 3M, under their Scotchbrite line, these aint abrasive, they're really soft. I can't recall if they came as a pair, because one's small, perfect for applying, and one's larger, great for buffing. I got a no name microfiber cloth at a dollar store in Canada, and it's what I use with the Gibson polish for lacquer and polyurethane finished guitars.

To me waxing is fun, I've waxed the Dolphin (there's a crude joke in their I'm sure) 4 times since I got it, going to do it again tomorrow. I've not thought of oiling the back of the neck, I love the feel of the waxed neck, I think it's incredibly smooth and fast.
 
mine is still 4/5 there after a year of monthly waxing, but maybe now that i need to wax 2 basses thing will change :wink:

a can of warwick wax is about 12-14 euros around here, so it's worth the money :D

It's 20 bucks here, so pretty well in line, I know I love the results with the actual Warwick wax, and with the little you use (I'd be surprised to go through a can in a year) and how easy it is to apply and buff out I'll be using this exclusively.
