I've always wondered... why do the four and five strings have different pickup positions?

I take it you 've always been a 4 string guy? :-D In my opinion it is about the low B. It's a special string and one could optimize the bass design for it. It's not done on other models but the Thumbs are special basses, like the string. When I play on the low B I find myself moving my plucking hand closer to the bridge and using a more pinch-like touch. It sounds tighter, just better. So I guess that's less of a necessity with both pickups angled like that, you get a better sound on the low B regardless of technique.
