Warwick Streamer Std with Wenge neck and fretboard

So i found a Streamer Std with wenge neck and fingerboard, 2 pickup model, for 400 bucks and am thinking about purchasing it.

Has anyone owned one of these or currently does? Whats the sound like and how do you like it. Do you like the all wenge neck? why or why not?
thanks for all your help in advance. Im just itching to get another warwick!!!!
 
for 400 bucks thats a steal....
wenge i slightly softer in the midrange then ovankol, so expect a slightly darker, warmer sound compared to an ovankol neck, but not massively :)
It should balance nicely with the maple the streamers use :)

What maple izzat, Willis ?

Streamers have a wide-grained, very heavy, relatively soft
body wood, and are known for being deep, woofy, thuddy,
and overall kinda "dark", even with an ovangcal neck. I've
only got one wenge neck Wick, a bubinga Vett, and I don't
sense it being "darker" or warmer than my several ovangcal
necked Wicks. No two quite alike, but I do have a bubinga
Vett with ovangcal neck [not same PU's tho ... ]

Anywho, my take on wenge necks, from my one example, is
not that they are darker, but that they are more growly, a
trait that implies MORE mids, not less. Whatevvverrr, a Std
Streamer can certainly benefit from more growl and $400 is
a very nice price.

with softer I meant that it has more of a low mide then high mid boost compared to the ovankol neck, based forum discussions and me playing some wenge ones ages ago :)
So pretty similar to what you said, just not as detailed and with possibly a bit bad wording, sorry if I confused anyone.
 
Well im gonna try to talk him down to 300, i think i can swing that much. Does anyone have any sound clips or personal use with this bass? Thanks for the help so far. its kinda swaying me towards it.
 
I don't think the seller would go for that. I just picked up a Streamer STD for $425 with an ovangkol neck (two pickup four string). By all means, try, and if you buy it for that you just got the steal of the year.

Just keep in mind that it's heavier than normal, has tone
that is the dead opposite of "spanky", and .... not yet
mentioned in this thread .... has a peculiarly low output.

Every owner notices the low output, and there are plenty
of web archives that address that, with no real solution.
If your amp has a clean quiet front end, you just turn up
the gain and there's no problem. If you have a noisy amp,
like a ratty oldie in need of new caps and tubes, you will
get a lotta extra noise when you increase the input gain
to compensate for the low output of the Streamer.

My latest Streamer even has a 2-band active tone chain
yet when set near flat, i's no louder than my old passive
Streamer. Sometimes I think the heavy soft body is just
soaking up vibes, thus reducing output and also resulting
in the woofy thumpy tone the basses are known for.


Ooooops ..... and that OTHER "flaw" that all owners tend
to ask about: View from the side, the bridge appears to
be bent near the string anchors .... cuz it IS, unless you
find a NOS example stored with slack strings. They all get
the bent bridge syndrome. But it does not get worse. It's
stable with that slight bend in it.

Ive read some of this before in searching through old posts. Its good to have it confirmed though.

I am a big slap player and want a bass i can thump and pop on all day. Is this bass a no go for that stuff? sounds like that maybe the case from what i can tell
 
Well, for one thing you 're gonna remedy the low output issue, especially if you slap hard. But I 'm afraid you will need a bass with a more open/snappy sound.
 
i came from a Corvette Pro line and i really loved the tone on that, right now im just keeping an eye open to whats out there and hoping to find a warwick that i can slap around on mainly, and also get some growly sound to!

maybe this bass isnt for me
 
It is a very very vintage sounding bass. The complete opposite of the Proline. I have both, and they compliment what the other cannot do perfectly. The STD is a vintage sounding pine body'd instrument. Many boutique luthiers experiment with pine to recreate the sounds of the 50's and 60s, although it is very tough to do because working with the wood can be hard due to sap if not dried well. I've seen it most in P-bass builds.

I say get it, and ditch the tone knob in favor of a Stellartone Tonestyler. You'll be able to pull off some awesome James Brown and other slapping funk sounds out of it, just don't expect moderny slapping made popular with active basses. Its more close to vintage tone than any other Warwick.

Although, it could be that some examples are better than others. For all I know Carolena Pine might have the same inconsistency as Alder.
 
I used to own a Streamer Std. 5-string and Golem is spot on about the output issue. It was lacking severely so make sure you have an amp that can cleanly boost it up.
 
Any experience with the TC onboard booster circuits from Bartolini guyz?
