Hi there, I purchased a Warwick Corvette FNA Jazzman 5 a few months back. I was wonderng if i could receive some help on tone. ANy suggestions on the EQ for dialing in a clean yet gut wrenching tone? And when I slap it seems to be lacking that "slap omphhh" I don't know what I'm doing wrong...

Can you add something about amp and strings used as well? / mats

For a monster slap sound dial in that rear MM style pickup boost your bass and treble a little.I find this works well, and has a nice MM vibe ,which is no bad thing in my book.
Best of luck,
Mark. :)

i'm using the stock Warwick strings which I have had on there for about 5 or 6 months...(since I got it) and I'm using a yorkville 200 watt amp...with scoop, bass, low mid, high mid and treble controls...hope this helps...should I change strings? Reset EQ on amp? I dunno...

Changing your string might be a good idea. Here are some EQ tips that you should know about basses.

As a recording engineer, I find basses to have great bottom between 40-80Hz, the growlyness I find it between 300-600Hz and the click and brightness I find it between 1.5-3.5KHz. Of course this can all vary considering that some amps don't give you control over what frequencies you are boosting and attenuating.

My suggestion is:

1. Reset your EQ on both bass and amp.

2. Go to your amp EQ and turn down the mid frequencies, and start bringing them until you feel comfortable with how they sound, if after this you still feel there is too much low end or too much high end, try attetuating either one of the frequency ranges.

3. The rest is stuff that you can fine tune from your bass. And try changing the position of the switch for the MM pickup, as it might give you better results in different positions.

The point to all this, is to get your amp to a "close-to-perfect (for your taste)" tone and then use your bass controls to add or take away from that.

Hope this helped a little bit.

I have an FNA Jazzman and If your like me and have the pull-knob for the seymor duncan slap contour then that will give you a nice thick sound for slap!
If not just put treble 3 quarters full, mid 3 quarters empty and bass 3 quarters full again. That shall give you a basic slap-esq tone to play around with.

First Problem, the Yorkville amp. I have an XM200C (15" speaker) And the amps sucks ding song. No tone, only Volume.

hey thanks guys, any suggestions for strings for the FNA Jazzman? I play every style of music, and prefer clean tones with a nice thick bottom end, but clear...never muddiness...

I've had an FNA Jazzman for about five years, and always got a great sound from Thomastik Infeld Jazz stings. Recently I decided to try something different, and based on recommendations from others in this forum I got some Elixir Nanowebs. They feel and sound great as well, and I've put them on all my basses. I've been thinking about going back to the TI Jazz strings for the FNA Jazzman though...

If you like the feel of the Warwick Black Labels, you should try some DR Bootzillas... they have a great sound!

nahh see thats the thing I don't really. I like a slippery slick string, not tinny at all...has great low end that rumbles the walls yet is clear in every respect...if that makes sense...

Then definitely try the Elixir Nanowebs... Clear all the way through!

They are very clear throughout the range with a defined low end and a nice bite, and for a smooth feel they are the best non-coated strings I've used. ... I was in five bands last year, two original prog rock bands, a Black Sabbath tribute, a Rush tribute, and another Wilco/Johnny Cash/Bob Dylan style jam band, and the FNA jazzman with the Thomastiks handled all of them very well.

For an idea of the sound, here's a cover of Limelight by Rush that I recorded a few years ago using the FNA Jazzman with THomastik Infelds:

nicely done man...wow great cover too by the way  umm one thing can you slap with em? and so their pretty slick feeling? (not like the stock strings)...

and what kind of EQing you got going on on your bass and amp for that tune...I'm digging the tone...

Thanks! I've always found them to sound great with slapping and popping on the FNA Jazzman in particular. I hated them on other basses like my old Modulus Flea bass though (man, what a slap machine that bass was!).

any EQ info? and is it like a typical slap tone? I'm seriously thinking of getting these strings...I mostly play fingerstyle anyways and I never really use a pick...

The bass was recorded direct. I generally keep the pickup balance slightly favouring the jazz pickup about 1/8 of a turn from centre, the 3-way pickup switch in the middle, the low and high at 100%, and the mids about 60%.

Sorry, was typing in this post while you were tying in yours, so I missed it!

no a problem...wow 100% eh...thats some serious EQing haha thanks a bunch! any other tips are greatly appreciated...

hey thanks guys the EQ stuff is really working;) man does she sound beautiful...the slap sound is still a little iffy...but im guessing thats the strings...
