So I just received a Warwick Corvette... it's a 2009 German-made bubinga standard model.

I took all the strings off to give it a bit of a clean and wax etc, and half of the nut came off in my hand. It's a JAN III, but I've never encountered/used these before so I'm not sure what's ordinary because I didn't really pay enough attention before I took the strings off.

When putting the second part of the nut back on, it sits this high:

Doesn't look right to me. Gently pushing the top of the nut reveals no give it all, and I don't want to push hard and break anything. Is the idea that the strings will push the top part of the nut down once I put them on and wind them up? I just want to check I'm not doing anything wrong before I break something.

Cheers

Here's the deal. Loosen the screws on the trussrod cover so you can move it around a bit. You may even need to remove the trussrod cover. Then the JAN III top piece will sit in place. Sometimes there is slight interference between the two, but if you get the top half of the nut on first (it's supposed to come off as you've described), and then put the trussrod cover back on, you should be fine. Maybe even install the top and bottom strings before you put the trussrod cover back on just to hold the nut in place securely.
