Volume difference

I play a 91 Thumb 5 NT.

I bought a 99 SS1 a while ago and found the volume difference to be huge between Thumb and Streamer (thumb louder, SS1 quieter). This was ok as the SS1 had a trim pot, so I could match them up.

Now I have swapped the SS1 for an 03 Infinity NT V and I have the opposite problem. The Infinity is so much louder than the thumb.

I tried dropping the pickup height, but that made little difference and made the bass uncomfortable to play (I use the pickup as a thumb rest). I realise that some of this extra grunt will be from the TJ pickup, but as there is no trim pot on either of my basses (as far as I know) there is no way to match the volumes up.

Any ideas on this one? Or do I just have to try and remember to dive for the amp gain when I change basses at a gig?

The volume difference is better with the TJ in single coil mode, but it is still a much louder bass.
 
I have a similar issue with my Thumbs. The BO is much louder than the NT. Because I'm very happy with the sound of each, I am hesitant to change any adjustments. My only option is to set each bass to the same volume using their own volume controls. I can still adjust them on the fly.

If you have a padded input on your amp, you might try plugging the louder bass in there, and the weaker one into the non-padded input.

I haven't played both in my band yet, so I will see the problem then.

Good idea about the input. The problem will be remembering in a live situation.

The Infinity is mega-loud though!!!!!
 
Practicing with my band this Sunday. It will be the first time the Inifnity has been played at a good volume. Looking forward to hearing how it copes with the band.
 
I have a volume difference between the active and passive vettes I own. I've got a Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster pedal, which has adjustable levels of gain. I've discovered the passive bass is about 6-7db quieter than the active bass. I simply set the pedal to a 6db boost, and engage it when i use the passive bass, and disengage when i swap to active bass. that way, my other pedals and amp sees the same amount of signal.
 
This little pedal will help you without losing signal quality :-)

I've had my Trace Elliot set up annoying my neighbours this afternoon, and I've found the answer...

1. Gain dropped from 7 to 4 on my amp
2. Thumb goes into passive input - mid-pre shape on (using recently purchased Trace Elliot switch pedal)
3. Infinity goes into Active input - mid-pre shape off

Now I can run my infinity just below flat on the bass control, and boost the top with the treble control on the bass.
