Vette $$-5 vs. SS1-5

As you probably know I have a Vette $$-5 and a SS1-5. I'm also playing in two bands, a Latin/Funk-band and a Rock-band.

I've been experimenting:

I took my SS1 to my rock-band rehearsal today, for the first time. Oh my Dear, I got disappointed :cry:. It couldn't keep up with the sound at all. Not even with the 3-band EQ. The SS1 lacked the power of the $$ in this case. When I plugged the $$ in, the difference was so obvious. The $$ is sooooooo powerful.

The opposite happened during a rehearsal with my Funk-band a few weeks ago. The tone of the $$ boooomed away all the other instruments. Switching to the SS1 made a cool breeze, flow over the music and the sound was fantastic. The slap tone is a killer...

I need to keep both.... :) ... really.

Good decision !


As far as I'm concerned, in my melodic metal band the $$ was way too boomy. My Streamer LX sounds much better !
 
That's a good story Patrick :-) You've got two very different sounding basses, and this is perfect to cover more music styles. Now you really don't need to buy another one... except maybe...

- SSII- for nasal sound when needed
- Thumb NT for modern rock
- Maybe an old school instrument, a Ric or something, to have some fun
- A thumb NT fretless... every woman in the world knows that we need a freless.
- However, a double bass is needed. First for it's specific sound, and second, it will make you a better, stronger musician.
- Sometimes, the whole double bass can be difficult to carry around, so you must buy a Framus electric upright.
- A bigger car wil be needed of course
- A small Steinberger, to study when you ar not home.
- A Fender, don't ask me why, it's just cool to have one.
- A Streamer LX, for a powerful synthetic kind of sound

We both know this is like never ending story :-)
 
and a huge amp to keep them sounding good :wink:

I have found the two perfect instruments for my two bands.

My biggest take-away is that the vette $$ REALLY has a damn outrageous sound. I know I've been preaching about this on the forum before (among others) but it must be said again. So don't underestimate it!

The SS1 remains my slapper and my beauty.
 
I love those Stage basses! Scuba, you know I'm a fan of the SS1 slap tone. Can't wait to hear the latin stuff. Having trouble connecting with the My Space link but I'll keep trying. You've got me wondering if the $$ is as powerful as my Vette Jazzman. I didn't own the $$ for long enough to fully test it out (I was even greener then and had many basses to try). Anyway, enjoy my friend!
 
I am curious though............

how you gonna dig the Thumb........................it's nasty and mix cutting as hell................without being bluntly booming................. 8)

Oh, I undesrtood perfectly what you said, just I was trying to be funny .... sorry'bout that :-)
 
I've had my $$ 5 fretless for just over a month.

Yes it's boomy but like all things in life you learn to live with the bad points and get the max out of the good.

..and there's lots of good in the $$. My band couldn't believe it's a fretless , and I just love that rich tone on STRAIGHT settings: bass + treble + balance centered, both p/u's in series. Mind you I've knocked off a little bottom end on the amp eq, to lessen the boom especially on the B string. For the rock / fusion this bass is brilliant.

Since this is my 1st 'wick I keep asking myself if a lower end production model is this good, what would a Streamer, Thumb or custom shop bass sound like!?

Hehe, I use my PUs in parallel most of the time. Just to keep the boom!

I'll keep my Vette $$ for now, just because of the "boom". That's what it's built for IMO and that's what I like about it.... :D
