whats the problem with using a pick? i play fingerstyle and i use picks. whatever the bandsound needs...more attack or more groove. it´s all about making music and not about the playing style.
 
Damn! This Bass is why i fell in love with warwick! but its almost 2 times more expensive then my corvette :cry:
 
Personally,i'd much prefer to sound good than look good & yes,i use a pick as well as my fingers,hell,i'd use my toungue if it sounded good. :lol:

I use only pick when playing with my bend, it doesnt mean that I can't play with fingers. All the metalheads will agree with me: try to folow a blastbeat for an hour on concert and you will see thet it sounds shity, you'll sound more like you are playing a trumphet than a bass.
The playing stile that you use shuld be the one that sounds best with your band! For Heavy metal it is definetly a pick besause you need definition and attack all the concert and you need to contemplate the sound of dubble bass drum.

This doesn't seem to be a problem for Robert Trujillo, nor did it for Cliff Burton...

mate I've played with many metal bands over the years & to me it depends on the song,this song plays & sounds better with a pick,another song might not,whatever floats your boat. :wink:
 
Yes it works with Robert Trujillo but remember when Jason tried the same on and justice it didn't actualy work. And if you read my post till the end I said that you should use the stile that is best for your bend. I just wanted to say that playing extreme music with fingers doesn't sound better than when played with a pick. Metallica is not an extreme bend in my standards that is why I mentioned blast-beat, usualy played in death and black metal, that Metallica and other mainstream bands don't use. Of course there are some exceptional bass players that can pull it of with their fingers but other times the bassists won't use the pick because of their pride and stubborn nature.

I do get your point, I just believe that a fast bass-line played with fingers doesn't sound like a trumpet.
 
the guy in cannible corpse plays his spector with his fingers as does the dude that plays with the berzerker.both pretty extreme bands mate.theres more but I'm not remembering them all right now. :wink:
 
I did mention that there are gret bass players that can play virtualy everything with their fingers but I was just defending the player that was attacked for playing wit pick and thus i tried to explain why the majority of metal players use pick instead of their fingers. This now became a total off-topic so this will be my last post. Once again no ofense ment, just tried to explain my point of view

None taken! :D But I'd have to say it really depends on who's playing. David Ellefson uses a pick and I think he's great

Yep! As far as I know Alex Webster always uses his fingers and never uses any effects! Just clean sound! :shock:
