Unusual Corvette $$ electronic issue

Hi all,

This is my first post here, and it's actually a request for advice or help. I have owned a black Corvette $$ for about five years, and in the last couple of months, a strange electronic problem has arisen. I was hoping someone may be able to shed some light, or point me at a good repair shop. I am based in Paris, France.

The problem only arises if I have moved the treble pot. If the treble pot is in any other position than flat, as soon as I move the neighbouring bass pot, I hear a thump. From that moment on, the treble pot becomes a volume booster instead of a tone control! Crazy. To get the treble pot back to a tone control mode, I have to jiggle the bass pot a bit, or move it back to flat. I'm not an electronics guy, and this issue is bugging me. Currently I am having to leave my $$ tone controls completely flat all the time, which kind of defeats the object of having a $$ in the first place!

I have been told that I might need to replace the whole electronics of the bass. Is this true? Can anyone help?

Hi Ric.
Have you opened up the control cover and checked if the pot has become slightly loose in its mounting and rotated, thereby some of the wiring or tabs touching? Rotate the control back, remove the control knob and tighten in place. It may be something quite different but worth checking. ;)
 
active? could be a fault with the internal electronics also... can be tested to an extent with a multi meter. it consumes a bit of time and de-soldering of some of the components....as warwrickhunt says look for any physical issues like moving parts or cracked solder joints. also fluff and dust in the pots that can create circuits of there own and unplugged errr, plugs.. has it had a tumble recently? ;-)
 
Thanks both for your insights. I haven't had time to check it thoroughly, but I'm reasonably confident that I can do a simple checkup. If it's anything more complex, I'll need to book it into a repair shop. It hasn't had a tumble, but it did take a knock a while ago, when I turned around too quickly and smacked the mike stand with it. Thanks for the heads up - I'd forgotten about that.
