Ever since the 9/11 thread I have been thinking about my personal feelings/opinions and the comments I posted on the subject. The more I think of it the more I am of the opinion that something must be done. This could/would effect us in a positive way on so many levels. So my question is, what would it take for us, the population of the planet earth to become one people; earthlings or terrans if you like that term better?

I am an Earthling that just happens to reisde in the small town of Burns in the State of Oregon in the Country of the United States on the Continet of North America of the planet Earth. And while we are forever catagorizing ourselves by nationality or ethnicity or whatever, from this day forward I will always consider myself an Earthling first and consider everything else, secondary to that.

Allow me to digress just a bit and look at the racism problem in the United States. I will not bog down this post with facts or the history of Racism in the US or make any judgements or comments about whether or not the fellings people have about this one way or another is right. The only comment I will make is ... as long as people keep bringing this up and up holding our difference, then they will never go away and/or it will make getting over them near impossible. As an example I will point out only one obvious example. We have Afro-Americans, Mexican-Americans, White-Americans, Whatever-Americans. By making this distinction, we are upholding and in a sense encouraging those differences that racisms are based on. What I am saying, is one of the first steps we should as a people take to help rid ourselves of these racisms is to rid ourselves of these titles that help devide us in the first place. We are all Americans period. So if we take a step back from that we now have the distictions of being American vs Canadian or Mexican or being Brittish vs Scottish or Irish or whatever or being from here as opposed to there. Again if we got rid of those distictions that would leave us closer to that goal of basically we are all Earthlings.

The sooner we get over these need of ours to point out those things that makes us different, the more we will realize how similar we all are. When we come right down to it, once we get past things like skin color or geographic issues, we are all basically the same. We are all Earthlings. Basically we all have the same basic needs; food, shelter, keeping our families safe. We all bleed the same, breathe the same, walk the same way. At our most basic levels, we are all the same.

Allow me to use Florin as an example for a moment. Here is a man in Romania whos number one priority is his family. Why do I use this as an example? Because many of us from all over this world so easily related to what this this man did, appluaded him for it, and stated they felt exactly the same way. How can that be? He Romanian and I'm American or whatever. Its because and proves the point nicely, that we are all basically the same. Just because this man is from Romania doesn't change the fact the he has the same love for his family or desire to do what is in the best interest of his family just like someone from Africa or China would do. We are the same. We are Earthlings.

For another example of this I will use InxS. Here is a man foom the phillipeans, and just like most of us, wants nothing more than to pursue his music and be able to play the best instrument he can afford. So he buys a bass from an unscrupulous individual from another country. Now this proves to us that there are people everywhere that are maybe not of the best character, which I know we all can relate to. I know this because of the outpour of support InxS recieved from people all of the world to help correct this injustice and get him the bass that he was due.

I think the internet is one of the greatest tools ever for helping us to see and appreciate how similar we all trully are. Both the above examples I believe are eveidence of that. I also believe that due to this awareness and appreciation we as a people are starting to see, as a people we are capable and willing to cooperate and get along with each other regardless of these nationalty, geographic, and racial differences. Why, because we are finally really seeing that we are the same. We are all just people trying to live our lives on the planet earth.

So what is the problem? Govenments. I remember growing up being led to believe that Russians were evil. While Russians believed the same about Americans. Why? Because our governments told us so and we had no way to see for ourselves. But that is changing. We know can see for ourselves that we are basically the same, and hopefully can all see the need to unify as one people and stop all this useless and senseless hate.

Lets take a very broad and childlike view of government for a sec. We all live in towns of some sort and there is a local government; mayor city council whatever. Take a step out we get county or regional government. Take another step, we have state govenment, another step we have our federal government. Yes I used the hierarchy we have in the US, but you can adjust it to work for your area. Now there is some taalk about establishing a sort of north american colilition simiar to the european union, so that would be the next step out but what is ultimately missing is a unified global govenment. Some may argue and say that is what NATO is or is suppossed to be. But I don't think so. NATO is kind of a global police force and not everyone is invited to partisipate, although they believe that everyone should be compelled to follow its directives. No, I think a true global government should be intitued to help lead us as one people in much the same way that our federal government is suppossed to lead us as one people of what ever country. And this global government should work to the best interest of all Earthlings without bowing to pressure and giving one country preference over another.

But how to do this... Now there is the 10 billion dollar question. And frankly, I don't have the answer, except to tweak the Preable Of the Constitution of the United States ...

We the People of the Planet Earth, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Government of the People of the Planet Earth.

We the people.... That's what its going to take. Us as individual Earthlings will have to take action. We must make it known that this is what we believe and what we want. Challange and demand from our leaders change. We need to stop buying into the petty differences of the past and look to our future. We the people need to change and with that change will slowly grow the seeds of change that will forever change our world for the better. We the people!

We're human,& therefore destined to kill ourselves.We just cant help it.I wish it was different,& I honestly think this current generation is the best & most globally responsible so far,there's just too many of us on this planet so we're going to ruin it.

I understand where your coming from and I can't disagree with the fact that yes the world is grossly over populated. Joe Rogan has a theory that mankind is nothing more than a bacteria whose sole purpose is to eat/destroy the earth. He likened it to the world being a rotten sandwich and mankind was the mold on the sandwich. And maybe that is our destiny; to destroy our world. But personally, I would like to think there is hope for us as a people. As you stated "this current generation is the best & most globally responsible so far", so maybe that is a sign that as we become more aware we will stop abusing our world and to at least start to try to fix the damage done. Its been said that its easy not to care when you don't know whats going on, but with the proliferation of information available today, awareness is growing and I find that extremely hopeful.

But I don't believe that anything, including mankind destroying this planet is predistined. I believe our destiny is what we make it. Sure, things are bad right now and if we as a people continue as we have, continue unchecked, then yeah, we may well end up destroying our planet. But, as I said, I believe our destiny is in our hands and if we, the people of this planet come together as one people that honestly cared for each other and for this planet on which we all live, then our future could be very bright indeed.

Apathy is one of the characteristic responses of any living organism when it is subjected to stimuli too intense or too complicated to cope with. The cure for apathy is comprehension. Again, as you stated, "this current generation is the best & most globally responsible so far" and again I say, I find that extremely hopeful.
 
I'm with ya Randy. I've always believed that everything in life is based on your perspective and we are too close to the problem to see it clearly. I think it will take something bigger than us to make us see what's really important. Not something "slow" like global warming but something instant and dramatic. When I refer to myself as a "citizen of Earth" people think I'm trying to be "deep" or a smart ass. It's sad because we really are all made from the same stuff but choose to focus on the 1% (I think) genetic difference that separates us. Globally, we act like children because on a cosmic scale, mankind is still in it's infancy and probably will not be allowed to be a part of, what I believe is a bigger universal community, until we get it right here first.
Growth is usually a painfull process and I pray that we can survive long enough to mature. Eventually, we will have to leave this planet but it wont be one at a time. If all of Earth pooled it's resources, we could live well and spread out together sharing a common perspective.
I hope we make it.:|
 
I reckon that chaos theory will prove itself and the earth will do whatever it needs to reduce the global population to a sustainable volume.

Of course, the answer to over population is vegetarianism. No joking aside...read the following extract:

According to a 2006 United Nations initiative, the livestock industry is one of the largest contributors to environmental degradation worldwide, and modern practices of raising animals for food contributes on a "massive scale" to deforestation, air and water pollution, land degradation, loss of topsoil, climate change, the overuse of resources including oil and water, and loss of biodiversity.

The initiative concluded that "the livestock sector emerges as one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global."

Animals fed on grain need more water than grain crops. In tracking food animal production from the feed through to the dinner table, the inefficiencies of meat, milk and egg production range from a 4:1 energy input to protein output ratio up to 54:1. The result is that producing animal-based food is typically much less efficient than the harvesting of grains, vegetables, legumes, seeds and fruits.

So if we all went veggie, we'd have more room to live, have more water, help reduce environmental pollution, etc etc etc.

There would also likely be a decline in cancer related illness, as meat eaters suffer 30% more bowel/digestive cancers than veggies. This would in turn mean a lesser burden on health services, reduction in health insurance premiums, less obesity etc etc.

The ultimate goal would be to return to 'natural living', where you're self sufficient. It would get people outdoors, get them active and take a pride in the process of growing their own food...not to mention that it's great for kids to learn about nature and respect it.

There's a real shift in the UK to allotment farming so I think things are swinging this way...still hacks me off though when you see "the youth" dropping litter everywhere like the planet's a big old litter bin.

Mmmmm, good food for thought randy.

I try and stay out of politics on forums, and i am beginning to struggle currently with most political debates as i am still trying to formulate what my political leanings, beliefs and views are. So please bare with me while i try and formulate all my views.

To begin with I take issue with so many things currently that would have to be solved before i would want to associate myself with this planet.

Honestly most of my immediate concerns are from America at present. Second is the way the UK is heading. America at present worries me most due to the foreign policies, the current corporations approach to business and the huge problem with ignorant religious folk. The UK with its ever increasing big brother approach to everything.

Now globally there are huge humanitarian problems, but i honestly feel if we are to progress globally we need to sort out ourselves first, now this would be by a country by country approach.

Now currently i feel the most influence (for how long though i don't know) lies with the USA, and my global ignorance will show here but it is the only one i can single out. For a country with so much influence it has so many deep seated problems, religion, racism, its aggressive foreign policy. Even with the whole health care issues. There's are huge amount of crazy stuff going on there.

Now governments i feel are a necessary evil, whilst i have read and looked into some very persuasive arguments for anarchy and a market where services can be traded for services (the proper name escapes me). The are just too rooted in society and would be hard pressed to remove them.

Whilst a unified earth sounds like a great lovely thought, if the ineptitude of our current governments is anything to go by i honestly think it would do more harm than good until like i mentioned we can sort our own countries out.

The second issue would be large corporations, the current economic situation is mostly due to these and with their influence, and their current practices opening up something like a global government opens them up to propagate these even further.

I need to stop for a bit all my thought are beginning to ramble and detract from the argument that i am still trying to formulate. I will leave it with these points for now, and if i can get my views more concise and an argument formulated i will add it at a later date.

You're concerned about the UK and US, but not China, with their track record of humanitarian issues and general 'blanket' on free speech and information?

The same for Iran? North Korea?

I gotta say mate, we're fortunate to live in countries where we can casually discuss topics like these on Internet forums, especially those of high-quality European-made musical instruments!

I don't deny that the West has problems, (the US Health system being one of the most publicized), but to effectively blame the state of the world on the US and UK just doesn't make sense. Sure there's crazies here, but there's crazies everywhere — that's human nature. Like I said before; we're lucky we can walk down the street with the knowledge that we are relatively safer and have better living conditions than others.

I definitely agree with you that while it is a 'lovely thought', the global village is not going to happen through governments alone. I mean, not even the UN can operate without scandal and corruption (I've had friends 'fired' from that organization from discovering the very thing).

Maybe one day we'll all be able to play happily together in the school yard, but I think it's something that is going to happen gradually as part of the natural evolution process, and not overnight!

Lex don't be sorry! its called your opinion because its yours, discussions would be rather dull if everyone agreed!

I should have phrased my point as 'immediate concerns' - my post has been edited accordingly. I guess its my own selfishness that at present i am only really concerned with things that will directly affect me, thus singling out those 2 countries, and western powers.

Blaming the western powers whilst being easy i also feel is necessary, if the are to lead by example then i honestly do not like the examples of the western powers and the way they are acting. The current situation (globally) and the lack of what i feel is any real progress and political change is really getting to me.

Lex i agree with you on all your points especially you last points, we are very lucky to live where we live, discuss what we discuss, and play what we play. But even with that shouldn't we be striving to make things better for everyone?

Once we can do it for ourselves then we could start to work on the rest of the world. Like you said though its going to be a slow, and gradual evolution - i'm just being impatient about it i guess.

Hopefully we're going to lead better by example especially with a change here in the US... we're still doing better though in my opinion than other world leaders!!!

Well IMHO, Callum is something right.
I live in a not so rich country in eastern Europe. So there are some things you can learn and feel only if you live here.
It's like... we are not really allowed to develop. We had good agriculture, and ..(how do you call when you rise animals...)
Also pretty big industry too...

We were included in the European Union, and then some rules came from the EU. Rules that frankly I think they were made especially to close all of our small business. I mean Until 10 years ago we were laughing how the poor occidentals had to pay big bucks for Bio food. How stupid... Here everything was bio... Milk was milk, tomatoes were red, little soft and very very tasty. I dare to say that most of you have absolutely no Idea how a peach really taste, and I mean it!

Well... somehow... you cannot buy fresh milk now, only packed milk that last forever, and looks like water sugar and some chemicals. Has nice "global" names, but it is NOT milk. So they closed all our factories, because they were not following the "EU rules", and they started to make this new product that should have a new name really, beacause it is NOT milk.

Well, this was only a little example. There are so many things that are wrong here, and the explanations are simple when you try to look who has to win.
We are a poor country in Europe.
Last month Ford built the first car in Romania. Well, thank you Ford!!! It is nice to invest in a country where people are paid with 300 EUR / month.
But maybe this is the reason we are poor.
As I said, some things you see only when you live in that place. But here the general feeling (or my general feeling) is that we have nothing to do, we were conquered. But not with guns this time.
And all those politicians... they look like puppets in the big corporation's hands.
With all the respect to the US citizens, you don't have the feeling that the last presidents look more like actors and not like real powerful, leading men?

This is only my humble oppinion, and I am sorry if my post offended someone.
But the conlusion is:

Randy, I think we are going to what are you dreaming of, but in a more evil way that you imagine. A unified world nation, where the whole world is ruled by not many people. So your dream will come true I am afraid.
 
Florin, the same thing has happened in the UK with our industry, or lack of it now. I wonder who is benefiting from the EU or globalisation as it doesn't seem to be it's citizens. In an ideal world we would all be one big happy family but unfortunately there are always people out there trying to get something for nothing. Greedy, lying, robbing ba%*ards, and I don't just mean the politicians. Randy, I think all of us would love to live in your utopia but when people (the human race) are involved we manage to screw it up. We would have to rely on honesty and fairness but in my experience people with these qualities tend to be trodden on by other less scrupulous people to further their own gain. Now I'm depressed :(
 
As long as there is greed, jealousy and want (and lets face it, we're all guilty of that) there aint gonna be no utopia for us. It is easy to blame everything on the UK and Europe and the States etc cause they are the countries we hear about every flaming day on the news, but its all the other atrocities that go unnoticed that we need to worry about.

And if there was a global government, would it really be for the better? Can't imagine being the mug who has to count the election votes every four years for 6 billion ppl ;)

And if there aint no votes....well, who can say 1984?

All species of animals fight, most are territorial and those that are our closest relatives are damn right brutal!! If apes and chimps ever worked out how to build weapons we'd be doomed for sure.

And, just to leave on a really controversial note, (not sure I necessarily agree with this, guys, just thought i'd throw it in for conversation) without all the wars and the genocides, think how, as a planet, we'd be even more grossly over populated then we already are. Our resources are running out, and those countries that have the resources - such as oil - will very shortly be the target for everyone else.

What a jolly little thread we got going here ;)

You're hinting that the world depicted in Rollerball (the real one, not the crappy remake) will be the future. Interesting.

BTW, I'm not going to try to explain it, it's way to complicated a film, you'll have to watch it.

Unless we have another "world war"...the number of people dying in wars is pretty small...

i personally dont see how autopia could ever work. purely because of human nature. a utopia couldnt work while theres still greed in people... and i dont see how that could ever change. i need to sort my thoughts propperly before i post a propper answer.

Food is not food anymore it is poison. No need to preface anything about our politicians. We elected them.
Lastly there is not such thing as "Good and Evil". There is only FEAR.
