a friend asked me for a bass to record in studio since his bass isn't prepared... the only thing that gives me some concern is the fact that he tune up (from low B string) C# F# B E G#. is there any problem in setting the bass this way? is it too much stress for the truss rod?
 
It's fine if you make the necessary adjustments to the rod and action. Not sure if leaving your bass alone and tuning up a step and a half is really gonna lead to any unwanted side effects though.
 
I wouldn't do it with the standard strings because permanently it is too much stress for the truss rod and the neck.
For one session that lasts a couple hours is o.k.
 
its supposed to be the weekend (2/3 days)!
 
How about a capo instead? Or have him pick up a set of light strings for safety since he's borrowing your bass?
 
i guess he is going to change strings since he's going to studio but i'm not sure. neither of us uses capos, so i guess it's not an option.
 
I don't think it'll do any permanent damage - think of it like it's tuned to standard, but with thicker gauge strings. Just some truss rod adjustments would suffice - it's only 1/2 a step up.

Now, if you want to maintain a similar string tension, in my experience, simply drop a gauge 0.005. I play in half-step using .130-.045, and if I wanted that same string tension in standard, I'd play .125-.040. Just may be me, thought.
 
It's a little too much, but I don't think it will damage your bass. Especially with our tough necks. Ask him to detune when not playing.
