It means you have one with reverse action. You are not tightening it, you are releasing it that way. It just works the opposite way, that's all. So if you want to tighten the trussrod, just turn it left.
I don' t know if you can replace it, and - don't thing you should if it works fine. The trussrod is part of the sound too, you know ;-)

Ok... Do this way: link your bass to a tuner, and tune it.
Turn the truss rod 1/8 turn in any direction. Wait 5 minutes, then check the tuning again.
If the tuning goes sharp (up), it means the neck it is straighter, so you gnow the direction. If it goes flat, then you bowed the neck.
Usualy, turn right (CW) to straighten, and left (CCW) to losen the neck. But some older basses were built the oposite way.

Maybe I should take this to PM, but.. I tried as you said Florin and you are right, that tuner thing works.
So, my rod (...) works the opposite way. This means CCW to tighten, and that tightening introduces backbow. I suppose that should mean that if I loosen it, the neck should be flatter. That is correct! Still, with the rod completely loosened (can almost take it out), there is still some backbow left.
I think this is why I asked if I could just take the loose rod out and insert a two way rod that will allow me to take the backbow all the way out.
Am I making sense?

Pardon moi for butting in,but i think you can remove that rod by unscrewing it.If it's maxed out you may need to have the neck clamped & the rod re- seated.Which isnt a big job,but one that's best done by an experienced tech.

Strings are on, and tuned. I have a little too much backbow for my taste, but if I tighten the rod I get more backbow. I can't loosen it more. Probably going to take it to my tech. Thanks for helping

AHA!!! I DID IT!!!!!
I buy a bass to play it, and so I've never been afraid to do a little adjustment on my own. Being careful and using what little I have of common sense, I read in the manual :
"This can be found on models made in the 1980’s through some as late as 1998. The threads allow tightening of this rod only to the left, which may seem somewhat counterintuitive to some. If the adjustment nut comes off when turned clockwise, it is a sure sign that your bass has been fitted with this type of truss rod. The effects of tightening this truss rod depend on whether it has been installed with the threaded side up or down."
So, I screwed off the adjustment nut, grabbed the truddrod with a plier and pulled it right out from the neck. Took no strength at all. I then FLIPPED IT OVER 180 degrees and seated it back in, same end into the neck. I put the adjustment nut on and tightened the rod. This straightened the neck like I wanted!
