The government wants to introduce a licensing act that will mean all live music and dance acts will have to be subject to rediculous licensing laws.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN??? POTENTIALLY IT COULD MEAN DETROYING THE ENTIRE MUSIC AND DANCE SCENE in England

few bands can afford to pay hundreds of pounds every time they preform live, and within monthes the music scene will be in ruins.

dancers will be no better off

music and dance should be valued and promoted in a civilised society. if this act is passed THEY WILL NOT BE AND EVERYBODY WILL BE AFFECTED.

please help...



sign this petition and help the thousands of artists that will be hugly affected if this act become law

all this might not be 100% true im trying to find out exactly what the proposed law is, so i might have gone a bit over the top, im not sure yet.

besically from what i've heard if you want to play anything other than your own music (or it might be any music at all) you've have to pay for a license every single preformance which will cost a ridiculous amount.

if anyone knows more about this please chime in...

If they get a few hundred thousand from around the world and it makes CNN I bet it'll make a difference. Gov't use the media all the time to get what they want, why shouldn't we for a change? I'll sign on. ~M~

No offense, but this is the reason why I love America.

I really dont see this passing into law though. The ammount of money that would need to be spent to enforce and properly tax would probably outweigh the ammount of money collected off of the whole process.

Bloody meddling UK government again.

Not content with putting up my car tax to £400 a year (from £175 a year) on my little Honda sports car, and putting petrol prices up 10p a gallon again this year, they're trying to wreck the music scene.

I think it's fair to say that none of you should be complaining about taxes! In Denmark a Honda S2000 would cost you around £100,000 to begin with, and the yearly taxes around £2000!

But to reply to the initial topic, it would kill every coverband there ever was!

£322,000 for the coupé and £355,000 for the convertible! With our taxes a Bugatti Veyron runs at £2.3 million! WTF?!?!

...that consideration has never stopped them in the past... it's usually "knee-jerk reaction first: engage brain second!"

I remember reading something similar in guitar magazines here about 2 or 3 years ago... and I'm still doing regular gigs! However... once this government gets something in its tiny brain, it just never gives up (that's not intended to be party political... they're all the same)

The point at the time was that pubs (in particular) would have to pay far more for entertaiment licenses... like £5000 instead of £200 or something like that... so only die-hard "muso" pubs are likely to persist in having bands!

The reason given... probably to curb the "noise nuisance" which is preventing decent citizens from going about their lawful business - although no similar restrictions on pubs which have giant TV screens showing sports game and full of drunken Yobbos (see the other thread regarding "yobbos")

The real reason: to stop us expressing ourselves creatively and letting off some steam... which is obviously dangerously subversive! Maybe it's no coincidence that Stroudie has just finished reading "1984"!

...well, that's the end of my rant then!
 
1984 Should be required reading for everybody in this day and age. Kinda puts a new perspective on things, doesn't it? ~M~
 
...also try reading some of Mr Orwell's other books. As well as the social comment, they are also hugely entertaining! Try "Down and Out in Paris and London", and his collections of essays... such as "The Road to Wigan Pier"

hell yeah it did. got me thinking a lot. i keep seeing things in actualy life that bring my thoughts back to the book.

if that rule passed it would literally ruin my life... im going to get lots of people to sign it.
 
i'vemanaged to find a few more details (there's hardly anything on the net) and i think its actually the venues that have to buy the licence not the bands which was what i was previously lead to believe, which is no different to now except the fees are going up from something like 600% or something ridiculous like that.

the end is the same though. there will a total lack of live venues...so how will bands be able to play...and how will any band be able to get far enough to be actually able to play at the remaining live venues (which will be the arenas etc)
