One thing to ask, is a bigger impact on what?
On the evolution of electric bass? Or on the number of dudes who picked up a bass and started plucking away with a couple of friends in their garage? The impact of the Who has trickled down on every genre of rock, (Just like the impact of the Beatles, I guess...), from the Death-est metal to the pop-est top 40, through the hardcore-est of punk... John Entwistle is in my view, directly or indireectly, responsible at least in part, for most of the electric bassists in the world today...
Jaco? As great as he his, most bassists only hear of him once they have picked up the instrument...
That's just my view of things, I'm probably wrong...

I'm just saying that not all bassists are innovative/revolutionary. The guy from Fall Out Boy seems like your run-of-the-mill generic punk/EMO bassist, vis-à-vis both The Ox and Jaco revolutionised the way the bass is played regardless of genre. I read an article last year about how Robert Trujillo, by no means a jazz bassist, saw Jaco as his biggest influence!

Both player John and Jaco have influenced me playing bass, so credits where they belong.
However I have the same opinion as Jan, I knew who John was way before I picked up a bass and he might be the reason I started playing bass anyhow. While Jaco I did hear of after I started playing fretless.
Talking about books and bringing something at the table:
Last week I was in a bookshop and found the book 'Brave New Bass' by Chris Jisi. For those who do not know the book, it a book full with interviews of influential players. Each chapter also includes a few exercises or at least a few tips of those bass players. Really something very nice to read and dig in for playing.
(Sorry getting maybe a bit off-topic).
