greetings guys, I know I rarely post, I definitely view the threads WAY MORE, anyways, I recently acquired a beautiful 5er jazzman fna from guitar center about a month ago. whoever owned it before me took way good care of it to the point where it was too good to be true for the price "used" supposedly. I play tested @ GC and it sounded great. I played it at practice and it sounded... well... less than stellar. compared to my g&l l1500 and my Fortress one, it was kind of lost in the mix. I played around with the different settings and it lacked that warwick growl that we all rave about. not to mention the output was a lot quieter than the other two. any advice? would it make a difference if I bought the sd basslines and swapped em out? I wasn't too impressed with the mecs' on this one. im running it through markbass lmk500 and markbass ny406 and ny151 combo.
 
I can´t understand this all. Turn the balance to the bridge pickup, switch to parallel sound. Has to be hot and cutting!
 
that's exactly what I've been doing to get the best possible sound but then I feel like im limited to that configuration only. is it supposed to be quiet because the mec pickups are passive?
 
my jazzman streamer lx 5 has lots of output. ... far more than my ernie ball basses. change battery and get wiring checked out

IIRC my JazzMan had a gain tweaker pot on the circuit
board. Look for a small trim pot that might possibly be
dialed down too low.

I don't have the same FNA anymore, so I can't confirm
whether my memory is correct [I've had a whole lotta
different basses, so ...... ].

BTW my FNA Jazzman had a ridiculously brite tone so
it would cut thru anything even if not cranked to "11".
 
depending on the year it was made it might have a SD pre though
 
Depending on the deal you got, Jazzmen make -->KILLER<-- project basses. The world is your oyster.
 
Pickups height made a huge difference in output when I had one. I treated mine like a passive jazz and didn't use the db cut on my amp. The Sd pre in my Pnut should work and it's cheap.

I have a FNA with the SD STC-3M4 pre + a SD SMB-5a pickup. No problem cutting thru in a rockband with 2 guitars, keys and load drums
 
If the preamp is indeed a Duncan, the trim pot should be for the slap contour, no?
 
I definitely have to check for the trim pot, I remember reading about that but I though it only applied to sd preamp. mine is definitely mec preamp for it does not have a slap contour. its just the active/passive push/pull knob. my model is from 05'. pickups are definitely raised and the battery change did nothing to the output. by the way thank you guys for the feedback!!
 
$799 used, its basically mint except for a very small blemish in the back.
