The DVD thread

I had this idea reading about a thread on a certain Ed Friedland DVD. Why don't you all List the titles of all the bass movies you have, and then rate them from 1-5?! I guess the idea is to share some great material with the rest of the community. It'll be fuunn! haha. I'll go first.


(Bear in mind, I have a more Wooten DVD's than anything xD)


Slap Bass (Ed Friedland). *4 stars* I really love this DVD. I garuntee you it's going to put you on your way to being a capable slapper. The reason why I gave it only 4 stars, however, is because the technique he shows you may discourage you from slapping. When I first watched the DVD I stopped trying to play slap because I thought that his way was the ONLY way. Awesome DVD though!

Jaco Pastorius (Modern Electric Bass) *3 Stars* This video was a little depressing for me. I bought the DVD rather excited, but I had a hard time watching it because the way Jaco behaved just depressed me. I gave it 3 stars instead of two because Jaco was in it xD. This DVD will help you learn a tad more about Jaco's past, and technique, but it's not really an instructional video.

Victor Wooten @ Bass Day. I actually haven't seen this one yet! It's sitting in my mom's house atm, lol.

Victor Wooten/Steve Baily (Bass Extremes) *4 Stars* Whew, what a ride THIS DVD was, haha. Warning, you may be exposed to pure awesomeness in this DVD. It's the ideal instructional DVD for intermediate/advanced players. They show you a live video of a song in one of their concerts, and just as you're thinking, "God I wish I knew how to play that" Victor Wooten and Steve Baily pop up and WALK YOU THROUGH THE SONG! It's great. I only gave it 4 stars because Victor didn't have his dreads in this one xD

Victor Wooten(Bass Groove Workshop) *6 Stars* I am aware that the range is from 1-5, but this DVD blew me out of the water. This DVD has COMPLETELY revolutionized my playing. It's a 5 hour~ DVD. Just when you thought reading "The Music Lesson" was revolutionary, this DVD is basically a literal translation of the book, just for you! If you bought it, I'll garruntee you will watch it again, and again! Also, I was pleasantly surprised to see that 2 of the bass students in the group have a Warwick! A red high gloss Vette Std (Gold hardware) and a Thumb! (I don't remember whether it's NT or BO). GREAT DVD!


I think I have a couple more, but I just can't think of them..

I don't have the patience to get through a DVD, i'll lways end up watching 20 mins then having to pick up my bass to play and forget to watch the rest :/

That said the furthest one i got through was wootens groove workshop, i think i make it through 3/4 of it - IT IS AMAZING! i really should watch the end of it sometime

I have the same problem as Callum. Instructional videos make me want to practice so much that I just cant get thru them. I also tend to focus more on the overall music that is being made so my favorite concert videos act as instructional videos. My top 5 would have to be;
1. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Live at Slane Castle/Off the Map...Nobody does it like Flea in my opinion. I feel that once he stopped slapping he became the best bassist in the world.

2. Frank Zappa - The Dub Room Special/Does Humor Belong in Music?...Those two are tied because Tom Fowler and Scott Thunes are such great players...great song choices on both videos.

3. Primus - Hallucinogenetics...it's Claypool..enough said.

4. Rush - Rush in Rio...Geddy Lee is such an incredible musician. His lines are so hard to play and does it with such ease (while running and singing) that it cant help but inspire me to practice and get better.

5. the Band of Gypsy's DVD...Billy Cox shows us all how to lay it down and create a rock solid foundation for somebody to go wild over. Jimi is also a huge inspiration as well. That band is one of the best examples of what a band should be.

First of all, this is my first post this morning, and I have to say again that the forum's skin made by Matt is great! I', loving it

Almost all the instructional videor (that's right, at the time I was really watching them they were on VHS) were excellent.
They are very motivating in the first place. I don't think I followed one too much, except the audio casette - Slap It - by Tony Oppenheim - which is by far the best slap metod I've ever seen.

But it's like you have THE MAN in front of you, talking with you. I learn from their attitude more than the actual tips tricks and licks

I believe you should watch it. I do not advise you, I order you because it is an unwritten law for musicians especially to rockers and metalheads. :d
