The best trick to improve your timing

Here's what I do to improve and practise my timing; I practise (boring) scales-, timing, (alternate) finger-excercises while watching (a soccer game on) tv at the same time....

We don't have much soccer on TV in the US.
Kinda makes sense that we have a lotta NFL
[USA Football] on TV, and we have plenty of
sukkie bass players as well .....

Not to mention NASCAR. Cool for your inner
metrognome, but sukkie for your riddim.

The best way to improve your timing is
to grid something (marching band term)

A grid is moving the accent around.

make sure to do this with a metronome
so that you get a sense where the accent is
in relation to time.

its hard at first but the pay off is good
you get independence in your hands
(in this case your fingers)

i updated my java but for some reason whenever i launch the monkey program it just opens a blank box

im using mozilla; completely updated
 
...or you could have classical musician in the house who will almost rip your head off if you are not in tune or rythm :D I use a metronome sometimes but prefer just working to my inner beat, and said classical musician appears not have my head on a pike so far :)

I use alternating line to also train quick rythm so, mixing stacato lines with hammer ons etc, just to get everything grooving without overusing any muscle too much

vic wooten has a clip on youtube about timing and its quite good and well explained....learning drum parts in your head and just listening to good drummers in general helps with timing i find.i sometimes practice single drum parts on songs for example just one note per beat,i ignore the bass line and follow just the bass drum or even a crash/splash..its just a timing thing so what you play is not important its just about when you play..
metronome does have its use but it can be bad to depend on it all the time.it can limit your playing somewhat, in my view music is not always about being always perfect.listen to early "who" or Led Zeppelin .songs start at one speed and finish somewhere else.being able to follow and adjusting to suit is just as important i think..
