q tal amigos!

i wanted to aks to you sometning about the survace finisher for the corvette.

is it normal it smells like "this"?? all my friends who are close to my bass ask me.... "what does it "smell" like this?? is it you??"... jejejeje.... and i tell them about the finisher. some peolpe believe me... some of them not,... they think it´s me... jejejeje

another question.... do i need to buy another one when it finish?? does the bass need more finisher besides this one??

a third question.... sometimes it´s too hot in managua... this is one of the warmest cities in the world... if you see cnn en español weather news... managua is always the warmest in the list.... so... sometimes i need to pratice without tshirt... because home is too hot.... so... is it bad for my bass to keep it on when i´m sweating??? does the finisher help to avoid damages on my corvette??? it would be better if i used tshirt... and avoid the contact of my skin to the bass??

First, I'm a bit surprise with the smell thing. Ok, the wax smels a bit when you're putting it on the bass, but I can't smell anything afterward. Even when I put my nose right on the bass I can't smell the wax.

Secondly, yes, you'll have to buy another one. Natural finish basses need regular treatment especially when it's new (at least once a week, as mentioned in the warwick user booklet) then, with time you can space waxing. However, it depends on the conditions : as you say you're sweating, your skin is in contact with the wood... So when you're playing a long time when it's hot, I'd say wax it after.
The wood has to be protected so it's better with a shirt, but if it's too hot, then take extra care of it.

Finally, of course the finisher protects your bass, that's why it exists.

Just a question : with hot weather, you must moreover experience the wax melting, don't you?
 
Rough spot

On a particularly humid day here in Texas, the top part of the bass where my arm touched (on the contour) was affected by sweat! I noticed the bubinga got rough in that spot and discolored some..I have put the Warwick bees-wax a couple of times, but it is still rough and a little lighter..My opinion is, if you want the bass not to have these and other minor imperfections, wear a shirt..but , these basses are pro-level instruments and meant to be played, so it's really your call..Good luck!
 
ye... you are right. may be it´s better to put on tshirt before playing.... sometimes this city is so warm that i drive my car without tshirts... usually i´m at home without it,... i have to tell you that i´m always wearing shorts and sandals....

and in many concerts, with some light on stage, i have to take off my shirts cause i´m sweating too much, and the sweat that goes by my arm to the front part of the bass is too much...

it would be great if warwick invented a special wax to put on ourselves, on our skin,.... that avoid we sweat too much when playing.... jejejejeje

i´ll try to study with shirt on. and i´ll continue puting on the bass the finisher.

if you wanted, i'm sure you could find something waterproof to put on the back of the bass that wouldn't damage it if you ever wanted to take it off. that way you could play without your shirt.

may be. what could it be? what kind of waterproof material could i put on the back of the bass?? would it afect the resonance of the wood?? would it look horrible??

i guess what i have to do is to use shirts!!! even if the sun is burning my house!!

I don't think a sweaty T-shirt will make and difference compared to a sweaty skin. You need to treat the natural bass body with wax ... and do it frequently!!

All my basses are satin lacquered which keeps the sweat away from the wood, but they are factory lacquered.

es verdad. i´ll cotinue treating the surface of my bass with the finisher.

One thing to consider is using anti-perspirant. Plerhaps that could help with sweat issues. No, I am not being insulting. I have heard of runners using it on their feet so that it prevents blisters.

Also, I have seen that some people put tung oil on their bass first, which seals a bit. It hardens as it dries. You could still wax it. Tung oil is not as thick and coating as say polyeurethane.

I believe tung oil is fairly waterproof.

Official Warwick reps will tell you not to use the tung oil, but I have never heard a good reason why. That is not to say there is not a good reason, but I have not heard it.
 
I too live in a hot climate & I know how uncomfortable it can get.If sweat runs down your arm grab some sweat bands to wear on your wrists,like tennis players wear,it also gives you a good wipe for the face & forehead.As for playing shirtless,it wont hurt the wood,just wax it regularly & you'll be fine. :wink:
 
This is one of the funniest post yet! Is the bass new? It is not unusual for wood to absorb the smells around it, If it was stored in a funky place before you got it that could be it. I always thought the wax had a mildly pleasant smell. Oh and Welcome!!!!

funniest??... jajajaja.... may be....

believe me sweating is a horrible problem when playing.... and believe me my wax smells.... and the bass too.... and for some people around me it´s not a "delicius" smell.... jejeje... after playing my shirt also smells like the finisher.... my girlf friend sometimes ask me for changing my tshirt....

yes... the bass is new. two months new. i bought it from sam ash, miami. a big music store.

Must be me - I like the smell. Perhaps a marketing idea for Warwick would be to offer the wax in various 'aromas'. Pomegranate and Rhubarb anyone?

Could give a whole new twist to the phrase 'Minty Fresh' :P
 
I just keep picturing trying to play bass while everything around you is melting and catching fire :lol:
