What are some strings worth checking out for a thumb 5 string? Any particular brand(s) complement the bass nicely? Should i stick with Warwick? I hate having to rely on the internet souly for these things. Unfortunately they don't let you pop open a pack of strings and try'em out in guitar center. Thanks.
 
This has been beaten up here for too long. I love EMPs and I think this is what most of the guys and gals will say.
 
Wow, i feel like i'm the minority here, maybe i should get goverment funding ;). its all up to you, but my personal preference are really like gauge nickel strings. any kind.

It depends what sound you are looking for... Nickel strings like Yellow Labels have more mids in their sound, Stainless Steel strings like Black or EMP's are deep, bright, and a little bit mid scooped.
I am very happy with EMP's on my thumb NT
 
Sunbeams are a LOT better than miller's fatbeams. There just clanky and the clankyness goes away and they're semi-dead. Sunbeams all the way
 
Sunbeams are a lovely string. I've used them extensively. Much warmer than most stainless rounds, and don't have clanky, zingy highs. They do have a nice top, but it's not brash and in your face. Quite strong in the mids.

Great smooth feel too - and they last ages.

I might go back to them soon. They are very nice.

I've tried both on my thumb, i found they both sounded amazing, but the nickels won out just slightly. I found they has a more smoother tone and in my ear more musical.
 
+1 on the sunbeams (amazing tone), but my personal favorites are Elixir strings. Besides sounding very musical to my ears they outlast any other string which makes them economical.
 
Hey MATT, I've used ( heavily) Elixir, and EMP
For me they lasted the same. For 15 gigs/ month, and rehearsals the other days - about 3 months both.

I've seen rare cases of acid sweat, where EMP's didn't worked, and I've recommended Elixirs.
But for a guy wit a normal sweating like me, they last the same, so I made my choice based on sound.

On my BO basses like STreamer LX I used Elixirs, to complete the mid area. FOr SSII, I found EMP's to be the perfect match for me.

They sound very different. Elixirs have a "rubber" feel on treble, but very strong mids. EMP's have deep lows, and nice harmonics.

 
Yup, which is probably why I like the elixirs so much. I've always liked strong mids (I guess thats my Fender Jazz roots shining through ;)).
 
+10000000 on elixers, but EMP's are growing on me. I just like the feel of elixers over emp's, and I do have acid fingers, the elixers do last a bit longer & look better when worn out!!

I'm currently using Circle K Strings; it's a new company out of Colorado (even though they're wound in my backyard). They remind me of Black Labels, with just a hint more of clarity and not as bright. Both are really subtle differences though.
