hey all.

I'm going to remove the strings on my LX5 to install new pickups.
when I change strings I do it one at a time to not suddenly and massively change the tension on the neck as I heard this may weaken the neck's ridgidity.

for removing the strings completely I thought about detuning the strings a bit and let the neck set for a few hours before completely removing them.

would that be right?
 
Just loosen them one by one, E, then G, then A then D. That keeps the nuts from breaking, then you can take them off.
 
It seems to me that if you are careful and aren't in a hurry, everything will be fine. I always take all my strings off when I change them so I can give everything a good wipe down. I tighten them in the same order that I-play-bass removes them. Like a piano. Outside first, moving toward center.
 
Yes just like I-play-bass says. Slowly is the key...
 
Very important...release tension slowly, outside-in. Don"t worry about that "robust" neck, it should be fine. If you have a JAN II, be careful
of your tabs as the nut could raise either on the top or bottom side if you detune from one side only. Does that make sense? If a tab does break, don't freak out. Order a new one(very inexpensive) and in the meantime, the string tension will firmly hold your nut in place. Good luck.

Try the DR Black Beauties. They are little pricey, but sound and look awesome. That my opinion.
 
hey.

the lower tab on the nut actually had a crack which I filled with CA glue.

the real surprise came when I removed the original pickups...
the suspension springs and the bushings for the screws had rust spots all over them.

seems warwick doesnt finish all their hardware to the same level.
 
I agree with the above

I like to take all the strings off so I can put a bit of lemon oil on the fretboard - not had any trouble so far.

I loosen all the strings gradually to take the tension off and then (with a JAN2) take the strings off outside first
