Hi guys!
Has anyone else experienced problems with width of their strings (namely the B string) not fitting in the groove of the tail peice of thier bass?
This is second time this has happened and with two different makes of strings (the first being a set by ghs & the second by elexir)

Basicly where the string has been finished off and doble wrapped it s too fat to fit into the grooves, the string has located ok with a but of force but its still not right and means the string height is slightly to high.
Should i phile the hole more to make it fit or just go back to rotosounds which seemed to be ok?
 
Very common problem.

Go with tapered B-strings or pinch the string in shape with a piece of pliers.





You also work the hardware with a file.. :shock:

Patrik again has the goods.With a standard tail piece you'll either have to use a tapered B string,crimp the end to fit or file the slot HALF a millimeter wider.Alternatively you can buy a new tail piece from Warwick that accomodates some non-tapered strings.The slots on this have been widened from 3.5mm to 4mm.
 
Hey, I am having some trouble finding a tapered B in a .135 gauge besides Warwick. That is fairly heavy, but I have been pleased with my low B sound. Does anyone know of a tapered low B in a non-Warwick string?
 
DR Longnecks are one, Elixir makes one but it's rare to find in a store. The Elixir is sold as a single string. ~M~
 
avionix543, both Elixir and DR only have .130s and not .135s

Those may be ok since they are both hex core strings. That may keep the tight feel. I have heard that the hex core tend to be a little less flexible than a round core. It makes sense that the hex core string would be harder to bend given that it has actual planes and angles to bend rather than round cylinder that could bend a little easier. A hex (cylinder) is stronger than a round cylender.

I like the tighness of the Warwick strings at .135, but I think they are rougher than others that I have used. I have been tempted to take some really fine sand paper to them to smooth them out, but I am not sure that would help much. It is almost like the core wrap is not as smooth of a wire.

You heard right :)

I prefer hex cores on 5 string basses due to the added stiffness, as round core seem to lack that, doesn't give enough punch to the low b as it ends up being to floppy.

As for back on topic....tapered string....mmmm....besides warwicks tapered .135 B i'm not to sure who else does does one in that gauge, I'll go search through all my string sources see if i can find anything i'll edit in what i find...

Edit: only found the warwick one but then i only use 2 websites for my strings.
 
I didn't have the problem with my original 6 string black warwick bridge, But when upgrade my hardware to the gold bridge I had to file out the string anchor a bit to get my b string to fit.
