Stop hissing?

hello guys, as you know, when the volume is turned up to a certain point the annoying hiss begins (unless you have a top of the line cream in your pants bass), im contemplating on switching pickups to noiseless ones but in all honesty i hate deviating from the original setup on basses and i love MEC tone. the other option is buying a noise gate pedal but im afraid that it will take away from the tone and sound that i have. what would you guys recommend? does MEC make noiseless pickups or top of the line stuff? i really dont want to steer in the seymour d or diMarzio direction (my bass just wouldnt look the same).
 
The MEC's are noiseless.
Maybe the cause is something other than your pickups.
 
Well, the passive MEC's can be hissy. But the active ones are dead silent. So if you have passive MEC, you can upgrade to active.
You need to replace the pickups and the pots, that's all.
 
the strange part is that it is active. it requires a 9volt that i switch every once in a while.
 
But are the pickups active?
You can have passive pickups with an active onbaord eq,requiring a battery ;)
If the MEC lettering on them is gold,they're active,if it's silver,they're passive.
 
Passive MEC pickups say "Dynamic correction" on them.
 
I was thinking about those mounted on most of Warwick with passive pickups, those with no open-pole.

Yeah,they're the ceramic bar magnet pickups.
Alnico pickups have the open poles.:)
 
they're gold, dont say dynamic corr. its from my fortess. could it be the wiring? ( i hope not)
 
Maybe it is.
One thing I do know,is that the pickups are dead quiet if they're active.
