Hi guys!

This question has probably been answered before here but anyway...
Does a stock 05 SII has any switch or way of configuring sound of the pups on the electronic compartment?

Not that I don't like how it sounds, it has amazing tone...

Nope. The pickups have one mode. It is called "PUNCHAWESOMELYTHRUANYMIXOWNAGE".

Yes! I am amazed how punchy it is indeed. I am trying different strings right now. With Ernie ball super light nickel the bass is so funky I can't stop playing notes on G string so much I have to remember myself I am a bass player :-)

I will try this week a 45-130 gauge with Ernie ball nickel coated and see. I could get used to light gauge but strings feel too soft to my right hand.

What gauges do you have on your SSIIs? I know it's a question of taste but I am curious as so many of you have this model.
 
I use 45-65-85-105 DR Lo-Riders. Best feel (love the higher tension), and best tone I've found!
 
I love high tension too. Specially for fast percussive muted notes I need to play in rumba songs. Feels and sound great!

my SSII (1988) was specced with bartolini JJ, sounds ace.
ive been alternating between daddarios 45-105 prosteels, but have just gone back to elites stadium 45-105.

EBs have a round core thus they feel springy "sort of soft" If you don't like this simply go for hex core strings.

Is that so? I've never heard that they were round core. Would you know if all their stuff is round core?

Regardless, I don't like their "D'Addario gauges" (i.e. pairing a 45 with a 100 on a 5 string set).
 
I think I read something about hex or round core strings on the forum somewhere.

I'll pay more attention to that in the future.
Too bad I can't just buy 20 different sets of strings and try every one until find the best for me

But I guess that's everybody's problem around here.
 
After a few years of practice, I tried a lot of different strings, based on the money I had and the famed people that used it. You have to change a bit, and if you're always in the same gauges, you don't risk much for the bass' settings.
My personnal return of experience is that I use DR coated strings (Blue or Black) 45/105 on my Spector and my Dolphin Pro2. On the Curlee (ShortScale) I use Skull Strings or DR 40/100. I used also a lot of Dean Markley Blue Steel, that really feels great under the fingers and last long. But I'm really into the feel of the coated strings.
Matter of taste for your fingers.
 
I just put some DR 40- 120 (Hi Beams) on my fortress. Love them!
 
So light gauge also.
I never tried DR. Seem to be popular around here.

Still waiting for my 45-130 coated E Ball. Yesterday at a rehearsal I decided I love the sound of lights but definitely hate the soft feeling in my fingers. When I dig hard for muted notes they are not as fast as I need. That's why flamenco guitar players use hard tension strings. I'll try them and see if the neck doesn't bow too much. I've developed an instinctive fear to tighten trussroads after breaking one in my corvette

obviously I was wrong :-)



Made from stainless steel wire wrapped around tin plated hex shaped steel core wire. These strings provide brighter sound and extra string life. Gauges .045 .065 .080 .100
