SS1 total makeover - need your thoughts

seriously, I'd keep that finish. Seriously, you don't need to wax/oil it and it ages well (it hasn't darken that much). But do whatever you want, just remember to take your time to be sure of doing the right thing.
 
Man, I'd leave that bass alone - it looks pretty nice as it is.

No. If your bass has a high gloss, that's the best way to keep its natural color. Waxing is the best way to darken your bass. Before waxing her you will need to oil finish her, and every time you aply the oil your bass will get darker.
 
I notice there's a light area where you play Patrik & it darkens where you'd otherwise wax it.I know you havent but maybe a previous owner waxed this bass & over time,this is the result.Either that or this is the tide mark effect from your sweat,keeping the wood cleaner looking.I think it looks great as is,but if you do decide to sand it I know you'll do it the right way.
**edit,the right way=melted wax finish. :wink:

the discoloration probably comes from waxing the bass (previous owner?)

I did the same thing to my bass:-) as I was not aware that it was finished.

The manual stated otherwise.

I think the put the finish on for good reasons (it is very hard to remove stains from unfinished maple). And if you play that thing you will have stains.

That's not a great idea. It will definitely darken with oil applied. And maple always darkens with time. It's just the nature of this wood.
I seriously recommend you to stay with this finish.

What kind of oil do you use to oil your bass? I have fretboard lemon oil?

For the fretboard I use lemon oil.

I have everything here.... Sand paper, steelwoll, wax.... everything.

Other projects are in the pipeline though. I'd like to de-fret a shitty bass and start to learn the fretless thing. That's probably higher priority.

That's the great thing about sh :shock: tty basses. Those are fabulous for DIY projects. 8)

I use nothing as it has a finish, a matte lacquer so the wood is completley sealed. When I clean it I use only a damp cloth.
 
Why don´t you just trade that bass for one unfinished one instead???

In my opinion the satin finish is a big +

I own one unfinished one and it´s getting really worn...And believe me it´s getting waxed and care all the time, it´s a 1991 so it´s not new anymore, For instance: where i place my thumb near the pickups there is a green hole appearing, the unfinished maple is just not strong enuff to withstand my slapping... sometimes i scratch under the strings when i slap so the bass is getting pretty beat up...But i kinda dig it.... And yeah is way darker now, she even get weird stains from places like clothing or the leather strap...so if you don´t care about this things go for it,I also have one Jazzman satin finish and it looks so much better even though it get much more abuse than my SS1

I have changed my mind actually. I'll keep it as it is.
