I've been messing around (fitting identical brand new strings and setting both basses up to as near identical set-ups for pup height, action etc.) with my SSI (1990) and my Spector NS2 (1989 USA) and I have to say that despite there being numerous differences (wenge/rosewood, different bridges/nut) they are essentially a very similar bass. However, I have to confess that it isn't until you can play them back to back that you realise that they are very different beasts.

The Spector 'feels' like a Streamer that has eaten a few pies and sounds just a little 'light-weight' when compared to the Streamer. I'd have thought the extra mass of the Spector might have beefed the tone but apparently not.

I'm now at a point where I have a spare set of PJ MECs + MEC preamp and I'm wondering what difference that would make if they were dropped in the Spector... Can you tell that I have a bit of time on my hands! :lol:
 
Great experiment! Could you give us some vid/soundfile in time?
 
I've a weeks holiday (at home) coming up in 3 weeks so I may have time to try this and to record clips; my only concern might be that if I swap pups and preamp in the Spector a prospective purchaser (I think I may have to sell if it isn't as good as the Streamer... though nobody reading this will buy it as they know it is inferior LOL) may think that it has been faulty or changed! I'll think about that for the next couple of weeks. I suppose I could still very easily do a recording of how they differ at the moment!
 
Most recent thought - it might be a good excuse to use my recent Hellborg preamp acquisition! :d
 
Nice story, but boring (for us) without clips.
