Solo settings vs In the Mix

Any of you ever had a bass or amp settings that sounded great solo but didn't cut it for a mix or vice-versa? Also how often has it been the case when both sounded good?

Thumb Bassm Ric and Pbass always punch through. Don't think it's purely an eq thing.
Jazz basses and Stingrays can be tough in the mix depending on how mid-heavy the guitarists are.

Never had any real problem though. I mostly play with flat EQ and adjust bottom end to the room.

It's all about frequencies.
Namely, how are balanced the frequencies of your bass compared, mainly, to the bass drum and the guitars. In general everything revolves around the medium!

My method is to dial in so that the mids are just a bit too honky and nasal, and the top end just a bit too bright. This tends to work perfectly once the rest of the band comes in, at least for my style.

When recording I try get the right sound for each instrument. I don't really have a favourite bass/guitar, I generally just use whatever tool does the job best. They each have strengths and weakness tone-wise. But I'm not too fussy, provided it's not muddy.

Live is different. I keep it as simple as possible. Instrument --> cable --> amp --> cab. Then I turn on the loudness knob until booties be shaking...
