Should i wax my bass or not?

Hi im am bloody beginner in bass playing and i am also new to this forum.

I have just a simple question about waxing my 2 basses.

I have a Streamer Jazzman 5 Honey violin, built in 2003

and a Corvette Std. Bubinga 5, built in 2009

So the question is where should / can i apply wax?

Only on the Corvette. The jazzman has a colored oil finish, no need to wax it.

Don't wax the body of your Honey Violin Streamer... It's fully sealed.

Do wax the Bubinga body of your Corvette - it's a natural oil fiinsh.

You can choose to wax the back of the necks too (both basses are an Ovangkol neck with a natural oil finish - certainly the Corvette is... I think the Streamer Jazzman is too).

I like to wax the back of the necks... it is good for the timber and I love the feel. Remember the area of timber around the machine heads and the sides of the headstock as well ;)

Some people don't like to wax the back of the neck and believe enough oil from your hands keeps it in good condition. It's your choice.

Regarding waxing... what you want to do is rub it on, let it dry, then buff it (not rub it off!). The philosophy is that over time multiple coats of wax harden and build up a nice protective coating for your bass.

When applying the wax, only apply a little! A little goes a long way. Rub it on with a nice soft cloth, then let it dry - at least half an hour... I leave it much longer. When it's dry and hard, buff it with another soft polishing cloth so it's nice and shiny. Don't try so hard to rub it off. ;)

About every month or so is generally adequate.

Don't treat it as a chore... it's a nice relaxing thing to do in your downtime and keeps you bass in tip top shape.

(remember the Streamer doesn't need it on the body though).

Okay the Corevette needs to be waxed all over (neck, frettboard, body, and so on )
and the Jazzman only neck and frettboard.

Is it suggested to remove all the strings for the drying periode?

I wouldn't wax fretboards.
I do it very unregularly - like every year and a half, with really not much wax. You're gonna ruin your strings by to much wax on the FB.

Better way for fretboard care is Lemon Oil. Like Dunlop Lemon oil.
Use a little to buff of the dirt from the fretboard, then again apply some, let it soak in and buff it off - like with the wax.
 
Regarding your question above about removing the strings for the drying period, no - I would not. I don't think it's necessary... it's easy enough to buff under the strings when they're on (you can de-tune them a touch to remove some tension when buffing if you like to help you get under them).

Hi again....

Today i got my Dunlop 65 Ultimate Lemon Oil (what a name).

My Jazzman has a esh / maple body as far as i know....
What can happen if a accidently hit the body of the bass with the lemon oil?

Erhm... I have question too, should I wax my corvette its obviously US swamp ash, and has antique tobacco oil finish. Does that count as coloured, does it need waxing? Since there I hold / my fingers get hit its starting to change color abit.. Does it need waxing or can I even do anything to it?


Edit : obviously picture isn't showing, but you can see the body picture on corvette club's page 26 if interested.

As lons as your bass has some sort of finish (and colour), your bass is protected. The only basses that need wax coating are the natural finish ones - the ones that have bare wood exposed, with no finish whatsoever; "antique tobacco" sounds like a sealed bass body to me.

As a general rule, I wax only the body of my basses and I use lemon oil for the fretboard and the back of the neck (because wax will make it sticky in gunky when mixed with sweat).

Any Ideas what can happen if i apply the Lemon Oil (accidently) to the body of my streamer Jazzman?

I am afraid that it will get on the body of my bass if i clean the freetboard.
