All these pictures of your insane effect board made me run off and order a pedal lastnight!

I should have my EHX Dr. Q next week sometime... Now does anyone know of an EHX chorus pedal other than the nano version? I'm not too fond of the EHX nano series... I need something with a good size case so I can apply some mods to them. :D

I'm going to be modding the Dr. Q most likely, I'll start with playing around on the trem pot inside to see how well I can adjust it to bass fequencies... Consdering I'm setting the bass up as piccolo it should handle it just fine. But you know I'm going to screw around with it anyways!

a bit expensive and im not sure whether its worth it.

the "chorus" im using is a Red Witch Moonphaser... after i got that my chorus gas disappeared
 
While I do believe in the great bass into a good amp gets all the tone you need fact, I also get a lot of rally cool musical and creative vibes when experimenting with pedals. And the analog ones that can be modded really slinky up the funk! So I plead "guilty' to giving you GAS with my effects postings. And you will hate me for this, but I am going to post pics and a review tonight of my new Option Knobs I just received today. They are boomerange/wing shaped and replace the knobs or knobs on your pedals so that you can easily adjust parameters with your feet - like adjusting the delay time on my Line 6 Echo Park pedal to give that "UFO landing" effect... About your Dr. Q, did you order the regular Dr. Q or the nano? I had a nano Dr. Q and promptly returned it, as not only was it very thin, it was also weak sounding and never really produced the effect it claimed - or really any effect for that manner!

If you're planning to mod yours, then you must have ordered the original, larger one. That one I hear is supposed to be pretty good and cool!

For a good chorus, I would definitely go analog and boutique. ***WARNING*** Don't go for the EHX Nano Clone Chorus...even though it is analog, it is VERY noisy and poor at its effect - it even gets my vote for all-time worse pedal effect ever! Check out the chorus pedals from Analog Man, or the range of pedals listed at Tunnel Vision Music:

You will want a warm, musical analog chorus for sure!
 
Yeah, I went for the original Dr. Q, I tryed out the Nano a few weeks ago and it sounded pretty good on the little combo I ran it through. But when I brought it home and hooked it up to my Markbass rig, I could barely hear it.

I read some reviews saying that if you adjust the trim pot on the original you can lower it to the bass frequencies. Either way, I'm sure I'll mod it to make it work better for bass.

I tryed out the nano ehx chorus as well and it sounded pretty good through my Markbass, But I'd prefer to go with full size pedals that I can mod later on.

I'm also looking into getting a Dunlop 105q again, I had alot of fun with mine a couple of years back... And maybe even an EHX big muff
 
So I found a Big Muff PI a little while ago for $40... I checked out some sound samples of it used with bass, And I'm sold :D I think after I get the big muff I'll start looking into wah pedals... I'm looking at either the morley wah or the dunlop 105q.

Anyone else ever tryed out a big muff on bass?
 
For primo analog effects, I really do dig the Red Witch stuff. The Deluxe Moon Phaser is currently my only GAS. I even went so far as to order another one from DBG (yep, they also distribute Red Witch in the US). It's technically in Rocket Music's inventory... but not for long :)

Their Empress Chorus is pretty sweet, too... but I've gotta give a definite +1 on using a Phaser instead of chorus. I always want a chorus effect until I get one... 6 months later, I'll convince myself to try chorus again... no thanks. Phaser is where it's at for bass modulation as far as I'm concerned.

I'm currently using the Maxon PT9Pro+ Phaser, but I'm being drawn to the Red Witch... the Red Witch is a little more subtle. My only concern now is getting the Red Witch to a gig situation and not having enough Phaser there. I find that modulation effects have a way of getting lost in the mix, especially on bass...

Well, for me and chorus, I stick with the analog chorus that's built into my SWR Mo' Bass. Sweet, warm, and musical. But I'm with you on the fact that Phase Shifter is where it's at for bass, when you can hear it in the mix. I currently have a rack-mounted EHX Nano Small Stone, but it is a bit one-dimensional and it keeps swooshing in the background while the bass is turned down until you turn the Small Stone off. I need to start looking for something a bit stronger, thicker, crazier, and quieter to replace it. The Red Witch sounds intriguing, but maybe a bit too subtle for me. 'll have to add it to my new GAS list for a phaser when I get out of the hospital.

The other modulation effect I've fallen in love with is the Sweep Delay on the Line 6 ToneCore Echo Park pedal. Not very boutique, not true analog, yet it keeps up in every way with my Maxon AD-999 900ms Analog Delay. And then it does a bunch of other tricks and has a longer delay time! I replaced the delay TIME knob with an Option Knob for real time foot control that allows me to do the "UFO landing" effect and more live on stage, plus I have tap tempo control as well. But the sweep delay is like a thick phase shifter on the delay signal that sounds incredible with bass and bass fuzz. Then I can add in a ton of warbly modulation along with the sweep. Never thought I could get such sounds and preserved bottom end from a little plastic Line 6 module, but now I'm a believer because my Liqua-Flange is also equally impressive on bass! Too bad they don't make a phase shifter module, although their Roto Machine looks interesting, and since I already have a dock pedal, it's dirt cheap to buy and try modules! :D

I've got a Small Stone on my pedal board and very rarely use it with bass. I've found that unless it's a very quiet moment in the song, it can really muff up your sound. It's almost as if the bass drops out when it shifts to certain frequencies. I did once try out an old Mu-Tron phaser and it was the best bass modulation sound I've ever heard. Sadly it was well out of my price range but if I ever see one for a decent price I'm definitely gonna get one. The sound was so clear and warm and retained all the bottom end. Gorgeous![/b]

I don't have any bottom drop out with my Nano Small Stone. It's just that it tends to hiss a little and swish in the background unless bypassed. It also has a kinda one-dimensional sound to its effect...

i did... and it eats a bit of low end and would make you sound undefined especially if the guitar player uses a lot of gain...

the best "gem" in the distortion area is a Digitech Bad Monkey - also very cheap.

as for wah... im using a Snarling Dogs Bootzilla .. they sell really cheap at ebay and it satisfied me so much, i never tried any other wah. it is the 2nd effects pedal i bought, and it is the only one i still have with me. it must a hell of a pedal cause i sold good stuff like sansamp and HBE Hematoma OD...

i use to own about 20 pedals or so, before i realized i couldnt cut it as a solo bass player and too much effects would give you more problems cutting thru with the band, not to mention a lot of button fiddling everytime you play different venues with different amps.

to summarize, here are my GAS busters:

1.) Snarling Dogs Bootzilla Wah
2.) Red Witch Moonphaser
3.) not really a GAS buster, but in case i need dirt, Digitech Bad Monkey (i tried the botique dirt pedals but this is where im at as far as budget and practicality is concerned).
 
I just got the Big Muff PI and it sounded awesome :D I havn't tryed it with my bass yet, As I'm refinishing the fretboard again :P

But once I get everything together it should be sweet.

I'm receiving the Dr. Q and my Piccolo strings on Wednesday, So I'll have quite the day playing with all my new toys! :D And next up is the wah pedal...

I'm leaning towards the Dunlop 105q
 
I think the T-Rex BassJuice and EBS ValveDrive are the shiznitz for bass overdrive. Both are pushing $250-300, though, so they're in a different league...

The nice thing about the BassJuice is it has a "Mix" knob on it that lets you dial in some of the dry/uneffected signal to reinforce the low end. The ValveDrive doesn't need that feature, though, it's just FAT all the way.

If you're after that SVT tone in a pedal, the ValveDrive is it. Nothing else that I've heard really comes close... EH, Fulltone, Maxon, etc.

The BassJuice is the current pick on my pedal board... but I think the ValveDrive will be going on there soon, too, after I pickup the Red Witch phaser... I'll probably leave them both on there. I'd use the ValveDrive almost all the time with just a hint of dirt on it to fatten up my baseline tone... then I'll still use the BassJuice when I ocassionally want some more serious distortion.

I love my Dunlop 105Q Bass Wah. I tried a Bootzilla, but it didn't have the right tone. I've been told the Morely Dual Bass Wah is a bit too subtle as well.

The 105Q has a very throaty, musical tone and doesn't mess with the bottom frequencies, so you get all the lows preserved with the funk!

Plus, the fact that you just step on it and it engages automatically is very cool too. It does take a little getting used to the change of tone from off to heel down, but there's an internal pot that lets you set the delay to a more natural sound setting.

A highly recommended bass wah!
 
I got the Dr. Q today, Popped it open and adjusted the trim pot inside... After about 10 minutes of making slight adjustments it sounds great :D

It has an almost dead on Bassballs sound when adjusted just right. This is the most sensitive envelope filter I've ever tryed, Which makes it really fun... I can get quite a few different sounds out of it, Just by adjusting my basses eq/volume level and the knob on the pedal.

On the down side, EHX pedals paintjobs come off really easily! My Big Muff was all scratched up when I bought it, And scratched up even more when I started using it. So being the person I'am I'm removing the paint jobs from the pedals and polishing up the housing on them. I may get some funky font stencils and write "fuzz" or "Q" on the pedals a little later... But for now, I still have to finish my bass up, I strung it up without finish the fretboard just to try out the pedals. And I'm loving the new pedals :D

That's pretty cool - and I like pedals that are modded with a new personal paintjob!
