Dumb question time.

Are the MEC J pickups used in Corvette Stds the same size for both 4 and 5 string basses?

Someone may have some J's and preamp from a 4string for sale, which i'd like to put into my 5er.....same same?? or different?

Cheers brethren,
Jono

they're different. the 4 string only has 4 poles, whereas the 5 has 5.
i think you might just be able to buy the preamp and rig them to make it all active, if that's what you wanted... but i don't know too much about this stuff.

MEC makes two types of J pickups. They are not called "4 strings" or "5 strings". We call them short and long. And inside the don't have poles, like the open pole MM style pickups. They have a big magnet that goes from one end to another. You indeed can use the "4 strings" version on a 5 strings bass without any problems. This is the case too with the Twin J series from MEC (both active and passive), we have a single pickup like this and we use it in both 4 and 5 strings basses.

After reading the replies and getting the straight and true answer from an expert who works for W (thanks Oliver), I would say it was not so dumb a question after all... in fact it turned out to be quite educational for me, as I did not know how my Corvette Std.'s MECs were constructed under the cover (even though I have swapped mine for Bartolinis that don't buzz...)

Good job! :D

Well I'll be damned...

As i learnt however, the 5string bass has two Long Versions, the 4string has one Long and one Short. So the 4string set I was gonna buy didn't work. We only worked that out after dismantling two basses however :(

Indeed ;)

Jono's (anarchyok) pickup swap-out didn't happen :(

The five string Corvettes have an MEC Long pickup in both the bridge and neck positions.

The four string Corvettes have a short J pickup in the neck position, and long in the bridge position.

The Short pickup won't fit in the long route on the five strings, so whilst they do have a blade magnet design, rather than individual pole pieces, the routing on the five and four string Corvettes is not compatible.
