Rockbass refinishing project

I'm not sure if Luke is on this forum, but he's recently embarked on a Rockbass refinishing project, which is well worth a look!

WOW, looks good. I tried to do thsi with my Yamaha BBG5S and I realized quickly that the wood underneath SUCKED, so I went and ghetto spray painted it. It is still in my basement in pieces.....this kind of gives me inspiration to finish it. ALL i would need is an airbrushing kit and some patience.....hmmm
 
Very nice!

It will look similar to my corvette rockbass, wich is also natural. :-)

But in fact, judging by the photos Luke posted, his bass looks a little darker than mine... And that's very cool!

Cool pictures. Why did they paint that bass blue in the first place???

By the way, does actually paint and lacquers have any impact on sound? Does any one know?

Scubadiver - The finish does affect the sound. Lacquers will have less of an effect on the sound than the new Poly finishes. There is a place called the Guitar ReRanch that carries all the supplies that you will need for a high quality Lacquer finish. I did one of their 3 tone sunburst finishes, in my garage, on a bass of mine. It came out great, I will have to see if I can find some pictures.

Stripping!

What kind of paint stripper did you use - I fancied stripping my Fortress but tried a couple of brands of paint/varnish stripper, neither of which even started to go to work on the finish?

Perhaps, I' m up to buy a Rockbass and refifnish it too :)

But I don't like those one-piece bridges at all.
Could you tell me, it possible to make switch to Warwick 2-piece bridge?

I don't like die-cast bridges - I changed the bridge on my Corvette Rockbass to an ABM bridge - pics on the "show us your bass then" thread - about page 40, I think.

ABM bridges are rock-solid engineering, and easy to fit. I think the Bass Centre in the UK (www.basscentre.com) sell Warwick bridges (in black) - but I reckon fitting it to a rockbass would take some routing work and should be done by a pro!

Thanks! It looks very nice!
But my first goal is to make that *future* Fortress look more "Warwick" :)
The second thing is that I like the Warwick 2-piece bridge very much.

Well, they really sell W-bridges (yeah, black!). And if I'll buy one, I'll order it there. Although it costs much to ship such lil' things from UK to Ukraine :(

As for a pro-work... OK, let's say I want to do all changes myself. Primarily because it's such a special feeling :)
Second is because it's very dangerous to order something to our local "luthiers" here in Ukraine :(

If you've got basic woodworking skills you should be OK. I haven't... which is why I'd go to a pro.

I do have basic woodworking skills but it' s better for me to find wether somebody has already done this switching thing. Still searching... :?:
