Reverse Jazzman config??

Hey guys,

Just dreaming the other day (as you do) about what I'd get in a custom shop bass, and was thinking about what pickup config I'd roll with. I like the J/J set up I currently use, but as thinking a J/MM would be even nicer!

Then it occured to me, I'd rather have the MM in the neck position (under the sweet spot) and the J pickup in the bridge position, for a more nasal/barky sound. I know Warrior offer this pickup config, but would love to see if someone else has done this to a Warwick.
 
After reading your post I did a comparison. Let me point out I was comparing them with a $$ using the coil-tap switches, so not a "real" single-coil pickup.

Overall the tones were similar. But the reverse-Jazzman concept sounded a bit "muted" compared to the actual Jazzman configuration. Similar to cutting the treble on an active EQ.

You would have to lower the humbucker alot to match the output of the single coil J pickup in that position. I think Warwick dosnt offer that idea standard for a good reason.

But if you want it, no ones stopping you!
 
Thanks for those thoughts guy, interesting results. If one could find a MM and J pickup that have similar output levels, perhaps that would give the desired effect.

you'd have to get a j pickup with a higher output than the MM as the amplitude of the strings next to the bridge is a bit lower...but thats what changing the height is for :wink:
 
You could go ahead and try this config with no problems I'd assume. The only thing is that I don't advise you do this. The J pickup on the bridge position combine with an MM pickup for the neck position, you'll end up probably with a treble machine.
 
I'd get a pair of TJ's then you could always split the bridge pup for the same effect, and it'd be reversible. Just a thought... ~M~

Not a bad idea after all, the TJ is my favorite pickup in the MEC, strong sound, and very transparent.

let me jump in with just a question guys, how does the TJ output compare to the MM? :D

yes...i want 4 or 5 TJ's in my custom shop (one day), covering the entirity between the neck and the bridge....hehehehe

I actually thought about this too, but suspected when he wrote "pair of TJ's".......I thought he meant one set of them, you know, like a pair of jeans, a pair of glasses..............so I figured maybe Seth's Vampyre has got a pair of a pair of TJ's (are you still with me folks ??).............Hence my TJ/TJ suggestion......................Silly grammar thing......... 8)
 
Louis Johnson played an bass with the reverse Jazzman configuration. Wasn't my preferred tone, but it was LJ. so it was hot.
