I've developed a greyish funk spot on the body were my arm rest. I tried removing it with soap and water and it did very little. What would be a good technique to remove this funky build up? Sand paper, steel wool?

Also i have a bunch of dings/dents on my steamer so i'm going to use the iron/steam technique to make it better.

I figured since i'm doing some body work i might as well get the bass looking better then new, i want to have the wet expensive furniture look. I really want the grain to 'pop.' Its a natural finish type. I've used a tin of wax on it throughout the years so i suppose i'd have to remove that somehow. Is this done with chemicals, sand paper, acid bath...j/k. I'd figured after that i'd rub it down with a few layers of boiled linseed oil (because i just happen to have some) and finish it off with some wax.
What grits of sand paper should i use for this process?
