Hey,
I'm probably going to get the new rockbass corvette $$ and was wondering how I would go about refinishing it.
I'd like to stain it, but have no idea what with...

What would be the best way to do it?
What sort of preparation would need to be done, if I got the natural oil (waxed) finish 'vette?
What type of stain would be best?

I'll pick up a few pieces of ash to test out some different stains and to practise applying it, but have no idea where to start.

This isn't specifically a rockbass question so I thought I'd post it here so more people would see it, feel free to move it though :)

I'm after this kind of colour, maybe a tad lighter...

You can just order one already stained.
Available finishes: Natural Satin, Coloured Oil (Burgundy Red, Nirvana Black, Honey Violin), Black High Polish.
Honey violin would probbaly be the closest to the colour you've described.Maybe a bit lighter.

The honey one looks like this, way too light and.. well a completely different colour

After doing some reading, it sounds like I want a water-based stain, would water-based stained wood still need to be waxed like the natural finish? or will it be protected like the oil-based stains?
I'm guessing the former is true, but I thought I'd better ask.

Also, will wax mess with the finish?

Thanks

I think it'd depend on the finish.
When you decide on a stain, read the care instructions. That's about the best advise I can give ya mate.

the problem with redoing something that has been stained once already is getting the old stain off. the stain can go deep and make sanding it out a big PITA..

I'll be getting the natural oil finished one, regardess of whether I end up staining it or not.
Just need to know how I'd go about getting the wax off and if wax will mess with the new stain I put on.

Merry Christmas :d

Ya can get the wax off pretty easily, with some lemon oil & friction/heat from a hair dryer. Then a chemical of some sort.French polishers do thisa thing for a living.Hunt one down locally,he'll advise you of the best course of action.
