Recording with my Streamer Pro M

Hi Guys,

As some of you would have recently read I have joined a new band - Dr Blonde. We'll be playing covers, and looking for corporate parties, functions, etc... once we get a few sets of material down.

So - anyway. I've attached an mp3 of one of the songs from our first rehearsal after my audition, where I recorded the rehearsal for later reference and feedback.

I'd like some comments about my playing firstly (I have since refined the octave pattern in the chorus and have that down better now), and also how to get a better recorded tone.

The bass signal was from my CL ND4 DI into a little Behringer X1204 USB mixer I picked up for recording the band's rehearsals. Also plugged into the mixer were vocals, a line-out from the drummer's Roland V-Drums (he'll use a real kit for gigs), and the guitar amp miked. Everything was live and recorded in Audacity on my laptop.

All the bass EQ was flat, and the bass sounded tight and growly live, but it seems to sound a bit muddy and indistinct in the recorded mix?

The Pro M sounds gorgeous, and the CL ND4 is a killer little amp, but I'd love to improve the recorded tone.

It sounds nice, you have a good sound and groove
I can give you some tips, maybe they can help a ittle bit.
- All the band is playing the song a little bit "lazy", laid back. I expect this song to be a litte bit "snappier" I am sorry I cannot find the right english words
- I would play that bass line with a "heavier" hand. Like, on the first chorus, those octaves I would play them more accentuated and shorter, I woud make them probably the hardest notes in the bass lines, you play them pretty soft. I would actually play them to have a snappy sound, slap like, but with fingerstyle. Same thing for the "beat one", I would play it snappier. I see that bass line as bootsy said - everything on the one, and then some notes inbetween, haha. So if you ask me, the most important notes to accentuate, are the first note, and the octaves.
Also, the drum has two bass drum beats, at the beginnig of the measure - one is time ONE, and one - one eight after.
This is the beginning of the song "we are fa mi ly" - how do you call that? Btw, I called "first chorus the other part" haha.
So at the beginning of the song, the drum seems to play a wrong groove, and one little extra thing it might help a lot
Bass drum is playing Bum Bum - time ONE and one eight after. The hi hat should follow this IMHO, open at time one, close with the 2nd beat. So should be your bass line. You start the first with the first bass drum, and you stop it with the 2nd bassdrum. So with this little thing could help a lot

Nice recording, man. Band sounds nice, although, I agree with Flo that the song needs to be more "energetic". I guess you don´t sound too "laid back" live, maybe it was the "rec button syndrome". Keep on grooving.

thanks Nacho - I think you're right. This song needs to cook a little more.



It's interesting, for example on Master Blaster I think we need to lay back a little more to find the groove.
