Why are people hiding/not publishing the serial numbers on their 'wicks that they're trying to sell?

Is this to prevent fraudsters making fakes and stealing their numbers or what?

Yup, that's what it is. It wouldn't be too hard to see a Warwick on ebay, and go to the Warwick registration site and plug in all of your info for that bass. Now of course it would be very hard to prove that the bass was stolen from you and put on ebay before you decided to register the bass, but nonetheless it's a precaution just to prevent the hassle.
