This kind of result:
is only possible because sandblasting digs into the "veins" which are softer than the rest of the wood. Guess you could sandblast any kind of wood, but not sure if results will be similar. Guess you have to use a kind of wood with soft stripes/veins to get that effect.

I dont think warwick invented this, i saw in on vigier (i think ) basses a while back.
And for the OPs question: you need a timber where the grain has a big differnece in hardness from the parts between grain of the timber. Swamp ash has a big difference in hardness and is commonly used for instruemtns. its likely that other timbers will have the same effect, of course for instrument making you need one that has the sonic and physical properties to suit.
